Darryl was my one big romantic relationship.â
âOh, my God! How do you survive?â Kaila whispered in horror.
Madison laughed. âPeople do. Sex isnât everything.â
âItâs a hell of a lot. I mean, I may not like it all the time, the wayâ¦I mean, withâ¦I donât know what I mean.â
Madison smiled again, hugging her sister. âI know what you mean. I still remember my marriage, you know. Sometimes youâre in the mood, and sometimes youâre not, and sometimes you oblige because you know your partner will just be pissy all day if you donât!â
Kaila laughed. âYeah, kind ofâ¦â She frowned. âAnd then I feel badly sometimes becauseâ¦â
âBecause?â
Kaila shrugged. âThereâs nothing really wrong with Dan. I mean, heâsâ¦â
âGood in bed, functions like a pro, all parts in working order!â came a cheerful voice from the doorway, and Jassy stepped into the room.
âJassy, you can be incredibly clinical!â Madison told her, grinning to take the sting out of her words.
âClinical?â Jassy protested.
âAnd the both of you are just woefully nosy and personal!â Kaila told them accusingly.
âThatâs what sisters are for,â Jassy assured her, and glanced over at Madison. âNo sex lifeâat all?â she inquired incredulously.
Madison groaned. âWe canât all be having secret affairs.â
âWhoâs having a secret affair?â Kaila demanded.
âJassy,â Madison informed her.
âYou werenât supposed to say anything!â Jassy gasped.
âOh, God, Iâm sorry,â Madison said guiltily.
âItâs all right, because youâve told Kaila. But Kaila, if I told you who the guy is, it wouldnât be a great secret affair anymore.â
âDid she tell you? â Kaila demanded of Madison.
Madison shook her head, then frowned, looking past Jassy to the door to Kailaâs room.
Jassy hadnât closed it all the way. Now Madison thought she saw it move, thought she heard the faint sound of footsteps behind Jassy in the hallway.
âWhatâs the matter?â Kaila asked.
Madison shook her head, wondering why she was suddenly certain that someone had been listening to their conversation.
Furtively.
âNothing,â Madison said, but she was still frowning. She rose and walked to the door, swinging it open.
The hallway was empty. She had to be imagining things.
âMadison?â Jassy said worriedly.
Madison shook her head. âItâs nothing, honest.â
But it was something. A strange feeling she couldnât quite shake.
âLetâs go back to the party,â Kaila said, smoothing her hair. âIâve got a great sitter in my dadâs own house, and here I am, sitting in this room and feeling sorry for myself when I have a chance to talk and party with adults and flirt a bit.â
âThatâs the spirit, kid,â Jassy assured her.
âYep. Letâs go on back out,â Madison said.
In seconds they were headed back to the party.
Â
âMadison!â Sheila said cheerfully, calling to her and waving her highball glass in the air. Scotch. Straight Dewarâs. Sheila had once told her that Dewarâs was the drink of choiceânever mix it with soda, soda was what caused hangovers. Sheila could drink Dewarâs all night and not look a tad the worse for wear. Madison envied her that ability.
Sheila weaved her way through the crowd until she reached Madison. âGreat partyâit was really nice of your dad to think of inviting all us Storm Fronts.â
âDadâs a pretty good guy most of the time,â Madison assured her.
âYou know, your brothers are all cute, but this newest oneâ¦wow.â
âKyle Montgomery?â
âIs he really your brother?â
âHis father was married to my
