away for the night.â
âIs she now?â His smile reached his eyes.
âYes, and she has no idea what time sheâll be back tomorrow.â
âYouâll be lonely.â
âAnd you, I saw Mike when I visited the town salon this morning. He told me youâd offloaded your shift on to him tonight.â
âDid he now?â Samâs smile broadened. âIs that an invitation for me to stay over?â
âI was thinking more of coffee on the way home.â
âWhy stop at coffee?â
âMaybe a little more than just coffee.â Her mouth went dry, as she realised what he was thinking.
âYou promised youâd have a date for me.â
âAfter Iâve spoken to my mother.â She conveniently forgot that sheâd called in on her earlier.
âThen you can give it me when I bring you home.â Taking her mohair stole from her, he dropped a kiss on to her naked shoulder before draping it around her.
âYou know what Robin is like at a party, Ems. He and the boys always hole up in the billiards room.â Angela went to her dressing table, picked up her atomiser and sprayed the toilette water she had bought on her last visit to France behind her ears.
âI know.â Emily blotted her eyes with a handkerchief. âItâs just that â well, you know how foul everyoneâs been to me â¦â
âThatâs why Robin and I threw this party to get you back in with the crowd.â
âSo they can cut me like Cicely just did.â
âCicelyâs a bitch,â Angela commiserated. âIâm here, arenât I?â Replacing the atomiser, she went to her bedside cabinet. Opening it, she lifted out a bottle of brandy, poured two stiff measures, and handed Emily one. âCome downstairs.â
âYou wonât leave me.â
âNot for one minute.â
âAnd Robin?â
âIâll do what I can to entice the boys out of the billiards room, but you know what theyâre like when they get together. Come on.â Angela picked up Emilyâs overnight case from the foot of her bed and carried it into the spare room. Emily trailed behind her, still dabbing her eyes. âI hope youâll be comfortable in here.â
âYes,â Emily mumbled tearfully.
âItâs important to keep up appearances. I know you and Robin are engaged but with a house full, we donât want to risk any gossip. Thatâs why I asked Mrs Jones to put you in here. Robinâs only next door, he can slip in and out without anyone noticing.â
âThank you.â Emilyâs eyes shone with gratitude.
âNow drink that down and Iâll get you another one.â
Chapter Five
âYouâll love it in the nursing home, the staff are marvellous and nothing is too much trouble for them. Billyâs birth there was wonderful, so calm and relaxed it was a completely different experience to having Judy in hospital,â Joy confided to Katie.
âMedicine has advanced in the last twenty odd years, love,â Roy reminded her gently.
âSeeing as men know absolutely nothing about having babies, youâre not allowed into this conversation,â Joy rebuked.
Not in the least offended, Roy wandered off, beer glass in hand.
âSo how are you keeping?â Joy whispered to Katie. âNot that I donât know exactly how youâre feeling. Between the backaches, the cramps, the baby kicking lumps out of your insides every time you try to eat, the heartburn, the varicose veins â¦â
âI havenât had the varicose veins,â Katie smiled.
âLucky girl, but Iâll talk to you again when you are having your second.â
âI feel incredibly well,â Katie insisted. âBut then John hardly lets me lift a finger in the house. Mrs Jones does most of the housework and prepares the evening meal, and we eat out most Friday and Saturday
