trying to marry me off.â He turned away, visibly ruffled. âI get enough of that from Mum. I have a sex life, Nikki. Iâve bedded my fair share. But youâre my goddess.â
Nothing could have dismayed her more. âGoddess? Good grief, I hope thatâs a joke.â She braced herself.
Suddenly he was laughing. âWhen I look at you, goddess comes to mind. You can melt men to honey.â
âOh, stop it.â Nicole was disgusted. She rose from her chair, looking out over the garden with its magnificent date palms and desert oaks.
âIf we werenât first cousins, would you marry me?â Joel followed her. She stood beside a white column that looked bare, stripped of its thick veil of jasmine.
âWhat sort of question is that?â She was aghast. âWe are cousins. Produced by sisters. Weâre close family. Itâs the only way I love you.â
âDo you think I donât know that?â He lifted a hand and stroked her smooth cheek, a gentle caress. âOnly joking, Nikki. Youâre such a special person. I badly need to find someone like you, but I figure thatâs impossible. I canât hide my emotional attachment, but itâs a mystical thing. Donât you feel it, too? Growing up together, sharing experiences, a little boy and a little girl. Itâs an intimate thing.â
Only, intimate was unthinkable.
Â
D RAKE WAS WAITING for them by his four-wheel drive as they taxied in.
âYouâre not getting out?â Overnight bag in hand, Nicole looked back at her cousin, who made no move to leave the cockpit.
âSay hello to him for me if you have to,â Joel said flatly, making no bones about the way he felt. âI just hope to God he treats you well. Him and that bloody bitch Callista. Talk about attachments! Boy, did she have a problem with her brother.â
âWhoâs now dead,â Nicole reminded him quietly. âCallista never created a life for herself unfortunately. Her life was her family. Thanks, Joel. Iâll let you know when I want to come home.â
âYou said tomorrow?â he inquired sharply.
âI mean what time tomorrow. See you.â She gave a little wave. âDrakeâs coming.â
He looked out briefly. âHeâd better not try to prolong your visit. Take care, Nikki. If you canât put up with more than a day, Iâll be back in a flash for you.â
âSee you then,â she said.
âTomorrow or earlier,â he corrected.
Â
âJ OEL IN A HURRY to get away?â Drakeâs expression was sardonic.
âHe said to say hello. Heâs pretty busy. Heâs following up on a few of my suggestions.â
âThatâs gutsy, confronting Joel. Heâs so darn belligerent.â Drake looked down at her, absorbing her beauty. Her abundant hair was up in some sort of knot except for a couple of long locks that curled forward onto her cheeks. She looked exquisite, but a little pale,he thought. He hoped that cousin of hers hadnât been acting threatening in any way.
âSometimes I think I am gutsy.â She laughed. âI could have gone under, but I chose not to. Anyway, Eden is mine.â
âSo you can say exactly as you please.â
âWellâ¦within limits. Siggy didnât like that I had all the jasmine pulled down from the columns. She couldnât make sense of it and I didnât explain.â
âBad memories. Perfume has an astonishing ability to remind us of people and places. When we were kids, you had the fragrance of boronia all over you.â
âHow extraordinary you remember. I can explain it. Dot always tucked sachets of it into my clothes and the bed linen.â
âNowadays you wear Chanelâs Gardenia.â
âYouâre too good.â
âMaybe I had a girlfriend who wore it.â
âI assume a girlfriend no longer,â she parried lightly. âI left
