improved.â
She cocked one eyebrow in surprise. She had no idea what to say next.
They were both silent. Then he said softly, âYou know, Cait, weâre getting better at this. Much, much better.â He pressed his forehead to hers. âIf weâre not careful, you just might fall in love with me, after all.â
Â
âWhere were you all day Saturday?â Lindy asked early Monday morning, walking into Caitâs office. The renovations to it had been completed late Friday and Cait had moved everything back into her office first thing this morning. âI must have tried calling you ten times.â
âI told you I was going Christmas shopping. In fact, I bought some decorations for my office.â
Lindy nodded. âBut all day?â Her eyes narrowed suspiciously as she set down her briefcase and leaned againstCaitâs desk, crossing her arms. âYou didnât happen to be with Joe Rockwell, did you?â
Cait could feel a telltale shade of pink creeping up her neck. She lowered her gaze to the list of current Dow Jones stock prices and took a moment to compose herself. She couldnât admit the truth. âI told you I was shopping,â she said somewhat defensively. Then, in an effort to change the topic, she reached for a thick folder with Paulâs name inked across the top and muttered, âYou wouldnât happen to know Paulâs schedule for the day, would you?â
âN-no, I havenât seen him yet. Why do you ask?â
Cait flashed her friend a bright smile. âHe phoned me Friday night. Oh, Lindy, I was so excited I nearly fell all over myself.â She dropped her voice as she glanced around to make sure none of the others could hear her. âI honestly think he intends to ask me out.â
âDid he say so?â
âNot exactly.â Cait frowned. Lindy wasnât revealing any of the enthusiasm she expected.
âThen why did he phone?â
Cait rolled her chair away from the desk and glanced around once again. âI think he might be jealous,â she whispered.
âReally?â Lindyâs eyes widened.
âDonât look so surprised.â Cait, however, was much too excited recounting Paulâs phone call to be offended by Lindyâs attitude.
âWhat makes you think Paul would be jealous?â Lindy asked next.
âMaybe Iâm magnifying everything in my own mind because itâs what I so badly want to believe. But he did phoneâ¦â
âWhat did he say?â Lindy pressed, sounding more curious now. âIt seems to me he must have had a reason.â
âOh, he did. He mentioned something about appreciating an article Iâd given him, but we both know that was just an excuse. What clued me in to his jealousy was the way he kept asking if I was alone.â
âBut that couldâve been for several different reasons, donât you think?â Lindy suggested.
âYes, but it made sense that heâd want to know if Joe was at the apartment or not.â
âAnd was he?â
âOf course not,â Cait said righteously. She didnât feel guilty about hiding the fact that heâd been there earlier, or that theyâd spent nearly all of Saturday together. âIâm sure Joeâs ridiculous remark when I left the office on Friday is what convinced Paul to phone me. If I wasnât so furious with Joe, I might even be grateful.â
âWhatâs that?â Lindy asked abruptly, pointing to the folder in front of Cait. Her lips had thinned slightly as if she was confused or annoyedâabout what, Cait couldnât figure out.
âThis, my friend,â she began, holding up the folder, âis the key to my future with our dedicated manager.â
Lindy didnât immediately respond and looked more puzzled than before. âHow do you mean?â
Cait couldnât get over the feeling that things werenât quite right
