they both munched on cookies. Sam looked over at Emily and smiled.
“What are you smiling at?” Emily asked looking up at him.
“You’re even prettier now than when I first met you.”
“You lie even better now then you did when I first met you,” Emily replied as they both laughed. But in Sam’s heart, he meant every word.
“Why don’t we take a vacation?” Sam suggested munching on another cookie.
Emily clapped her hands together in excitement. “What about Mexico?”
“I was thinking about somewhere in the United States,” Sam rebuffed.
“No, Sammy. I want to vacation right; away from all of this church drama that this man is drumming up; someplace where no one can reach us for at least a week, maybe two.”
“You know I need to be reached in case the church needs something.”
“The church can do without you for a week, Sammy. Besides you need a break from the pastor.”
Sam smiled knowing she was right. “Awww, he’s not so bad; just young and anxious is all.”
Emily glared at Sam and rolled her eyes. “No, youth has nothing to do with it. You know I always had my reservations about him Sammy. There’s something about him that don’t sit right with my spirit.”
“He doesn’t mean any harm,” Sam said grabbing his reading glasses from the night stand to look at the TV guide.
“No harm?” Emily crossed her arms and sucked her teeth. “Don’t get me started. He thinks he’s Jesus and there’s harm in that. The bible says that a man that does not have rule over his own spirit is like a city with broken down walls.”
Sam groaned. One thing he couldn’t do and that was scripture compete with Emily. “He’s got an ego problem and he’s a little selfish but we’re going to keep praying for him, dear.”
Emily huffed and crossed her arms. “Well, I think we need a vacation from him and the church.”
Sam smiled not willing to fight with the woman. “You might be right. Let’s look into it tomorrow, baby.” Sam removed his glasses and put them back on the night stand.
Emily snuggled closer to Sam. “No cruise Sam cause I can’t swallow all that water, I’d rather fly.”
“You got some wings I don’t know about baby,” Sam grinned wrapping his arms around her.
She nodded and smiled. “They shall mount up with wings like eagles,” Emily answered him.
The dogs began barking nonstop again. Emily frowned. “There they go again,” Emily said, “makes it so hard for me to sleep.” Emily turned the television volume down with the remote control.
“Just relax sweetheart, it’s nothing.”
“Can you check again?”
Sam frowned. “Come on Emily, it’s nothing,” He said.
“Sammy,” Emily said.
It was all she had to say. When she was worried, he was worried and it wouldn’t be a good night unless he did a final check. Sam got out of bed and slipped his feet back into his house slippers. “I’ll check the back window but I’m not going back out.”
“Thank you Sammy,” Emily said as she turned the television volume back up.
That last sentence was meant to assert his authority but he knew that it was merely a formality. Emily had already asked and he was already out of bed doing it. Sam walked toward the kitchen to look out of the back window. Those dogs were really ruining his evening and tomorrow, they wouldn’t get those bacon treats he had bought, he could guarantee that. Sam flipped on the flood light and pulled back the curtains on the backdoor window and peeked out; nothing.
Foolishness, Sam shook his head and turned around to a black figure standing in front of him with a wire held up in the air. A stunned Sam didn’t hesitate but instinctively lunged at the figure in front of him but was grabbed by the man and placed in a headlock. The two fell to the floor, Sam struggled to get up and overpower the man but the man was stronger and Sam felt the wire begin to wrap around his neck. On his knees, Sam clawed at his neck attempting to loosen
