these three overachievers, she decided, but she wasn’t sure if it was wise to let them have complete autonomy over her every waking action.
“You okay?” Marty asked, taking a hand off the wheel and placing it on her thigh. “You’re kinda quiet.”
She shrugged. “I have a lot to think about.”
“Don’t let it get you down, babe. Your grandfather will be fine, and no one, absolutely no one, will take this farm away from you unless you’re ready to let it go. Bay, Dex, and I will make sure of that.”
She flashed a wan smile. “I wish I shared your confidence.”
    “Are you questioning our competence?”
    “No, it’s just that—”
“I know.” He tapped the thigh he was still caressing. “Come on, we’re here.”
He pulled up outside the house and Athena stepped from the car to an enthusiastic yet subdued greeting from Rowan.
“He’s missing Gramps,” she said, tugging gently at his ears.
Max appeared from the side of the barn. “How’s your grandfather?” he asked, casting a suspicious glance at Marty.
“They’re keeping him in for a few days, but he’s not in any immediate danger.”
“That’s good.” He stood where he was, still sizing Marty up. “Who’s this?”
“This is Marty. He’s a friend.”
    “Never saw him before.”
    “He’s here to help.”
“Nice to meet you,” Marty said, sticking out his hand.
“A Yank?” Max made it sound like a contagious disease. Even so he shook Marty’s hand, seemingly deciding that he was to be trusted. “Take good care of her until we find out who did this, you hear me?”
“I hear you,” Marty said, steering Athena toward the house.
As soon as they got to the kitchen, Marty put the kettle on.
“Don’t you Brits always need a cup of tea in times of crisis?” he asked, grinning.
“Do you know how to make one?”
“I’ll have you know that…er, actually no,” he said, making Athena laugh when he opened the tea caddy and looked in bewilderment at their supply of loose-leaf tea leaves. “Don’t you have any tea bags in the godforsaken country?”
    “Heathen!”
Athena took over, efficiently made the tea, and produced biscuits.
“I suppose you’d call these cookies,” she said, offering him one.
Marty laughed. “Talk about two countries divided by a common language.”
“You’ll get the hang of it eventually.”
He leaned across the table and fixed her with a scorching gaze. “If you’re looking to get your butt spanked, you’re going the right way about it.”
Athena’s pussy leaked, even though she thought he was joking. It was difficult to tell. She wasn’t used to dealing with such decisive alpha males who appeared to go right after what they wanted, never even contemplating failure.
“I’ll bear that in mind.” She stifled a yawn behind her hand.
    “Tired?”
    “A bit.”
“Then go and get some rest.”
“In the middle of the day? Are you mad? I’ve got a ton of things to do.”
    “Like what?”
“This is a working farm, Gramps isn’t here, and I haven’t done any of my usual chores.”
“Presumably Max and George will pick up the slack.”
“Yes, but it doesn’t seem right.”
Marty stood up, took her arm in a decisive grip, and pulled her to her feet.
“Come on, you’re beat. I’ll tuck you in.”
Athena was all out of arguments and obediently allowed him to lead her up the stairs. His long fingers curled round her palm, making her feel safe and protected and exciting the hell out of her. She couldn’t afford to lean on the guys indefinitely, she knew that very well. Just for a day or two, at least until her grandfather was back on her feet. She simply didn’t have the strength to keep battling on alone, worrying about the future and fighting off their desire to help her.
Desire, now there was a word that sprang naturally to mind whenever she thought of them, which was pretty much constantly. What was wrong with her? Her grandfather was in hospital with serious
