searched through the car.
âWhat a surprise to see you today,â said Abby, opening the door.
âHello, Abby. Iâd like to see Judith, itâs urgent.â
âSheâs sleeping, but maybe I could help?â
âI have to get into the pub. I lost something last night,â I explained, tears in my eyes.
âWhatâs the matter, my darling?â
âPlease, help me.â
Felix was holding me in his arms when Abby, Jack, and Judith met us at the pub. Judith rushed over to us, but focused on Felix.
âWhat happened?â she asked, touching his eye. âJack, take care of him.â
âItâs nothing; I had a little romp with your brother.â
âYou did what with my brother?â
â Secret boy , thatâs all I can say. Letâs just say there were a lot of muscles involved. But that doesnât matter. Take care of Diane.â
âIf you say so. Right. Your turn now,â she said, opening the door for me. âIt had better be important because I want to know whatâs going on.â
âIt is.â
I went inside the pub and stood petrified for a few minutes.
âYouâve already cleaned up?â
âYes, theyâre open tonight. I had just gone to sleep when Abby dragged me out of bed. So what exactly did you lose?â
âA piece of jewelry.â
I started looking around on the floor.
âNo one died; youâll buy yourself another one.â
âNo,â I said loudly, and I suddenly stood up. Judith took a step backwards.
âItâs not Judithâs fault,â Felix said, coming over to me. âCome on, weâll both look.â
We each went to opposite ends of the pub. I crawled along the floor, feeling along the cracks in the parquet in the hopes I would find the chain.
âDiane,â Abby said softly, kneeling down beside me, âDiane, look at me.â
She put her hand on my arm.
âI donât have time.â
âTell us what youâre looking for; we can help you.â
âI lost my wedding ring. I wear it around my neck.â
âYouâre married?â asked Judith.
I couldnât say a word.
âLetâs leave Diane to look by herself,â said Abby.
I withdrew into my shell, hearing nothing of anything that was happening around me. I crept forward on my hands and knees, pushing the tables and bar stools out of the way, scratching in the cracks between the floorboards to see if the chain hadnât slipped down.
âWhere are the garbage cans?â I asked, standing up.
âIâve already looked, thereâs nothing,â Felix replied.
âYou didnât look hard enough.â
I sank to the ground, holding my stomach and sobbing. Felix took me in his arms and rocked me. I beat his chest with my fists.
âCalm down . . . calm down . . .â
âItâs not possible; I canât have lost it.â
âIâm so sorry.â
âMaybe itâs time to turn the page,â Judith suggested. âI donât know, but if your husband dumped you . . .â
âHe didnât âdumpâ me.â
Felix took my hand and squeezed it tight. I tried to breathe and crushed myself against him again. Without letting go of him, I turned towards Judith.
âColin is . . . Colin is dead.â
âTell her everything,â Felix whispered in my ear.
âAnd Clara . . . our daughter . . . died with him.â
Judith gasped and covered her mouth with her hand. Felix helped me stand up. I looked over at Jack and Abby without really seeing them.
âIâm going to keep looking; Iâll find it. I promise,â said Judith.
Abby and Jack just hugged me tight while I stood there, my arms dangling at my sides and staring into space. Felix supported me and got me in the car. He fastened my seat belt and headed for the cottage.
He helped me into bed. After making me take some aspirin, he stretched
