him, it was all supposed to be an act, and anyway, he didnât want her poking around his personal business.
âCome on, Dalton. What was all that about Linda?â
âNothing. Why all the questions?â
Her eyebrows rose. âArenât I supposed to know about my husband? And I might remind you, I wasnât the one who added another layer of back story. So donât get huffy with me.â She placed her hands on her hips. âAnd where did you run off to without telling me?â
âI went to call my ex-partner to run a check on Mary Jane.â
âAnd?â
âShe looks clean so far.â
âAnd?â The stubborn glint in her eyes told him he wasnât going to get off that easy.
âAll right already.â He muttered a curse. She was getting the wife role down a little too pat. âYes, Linda is my ex-wife. Weâve been divorced for two years.â
âAny kids?â
âGod, no.â
She frowned. âYou donât like children.â
âI love kids. Iâm just glad we didnât have any to drag through a divorce.â
âNasty, huh?â
âNot really.â Man, he did not want to talk about this. His ego had been bruised enough.
âWhat happened?â
âThat you donât need to know.â
Cassie made a face. âSo long as you donât spring any more surprises on me.â
He sighed. âOne day I came home from an assignment and she basically said âsee ya,â and that was that.â
Cassie gasped. âHow awful.â
He shrugged. âMeant to be, I guess. Someone in my profession has no business getting married anyway.â
âYou donât believe that.â
âWhy not? Iâm living proof, arenât I?â
âMarriages go bad for a lot of different reasons. Why are you so willing to accept the blame because of your job?â
âLook, not that I donât appreciate your concern, but save the psychoanalysis for the others.â Shit, he wouldnât have followed her out here if he knew she was going to start digging into his personal life.
Cassie wasnât fooled by his attempt at nonchalance. Heâd been hurt by the breakup of his marriage. It was in his face, and clearly in the way heâd reacted this morning. The thought that he might still love his ex-wife made Cassie a little melancholy. She didnât know why. It just did.
âOkay,â she said finally, âwe donât have to talk about it anymore. Just donât spring any surprises on me. Deal?â
He winced. âThis morning wasnât kosher. I apologize for that.â Something caught his attention behind her. He frowned and she started to turn around when he said, âKiss me.â
âWhat?â
âJust kiss me, dammit.â
No chance to respond after that. He pulled her roughly against him and used one hand to hold her by the back of the neck while he pressed his lips to hers. She couldnât catch her breath and tried to break away.
âBask.â Dalton broke contact long enough to murmur, âHeâs headed toward us.â
This time when he kissed her she responded, kissing him back, teasing him with her tongue across his lips. He made a low growling sound and plunged inside her mouth. Her breath faltered and she sank heavilyagainst him when his hands roamed her back and then dug into the curve of her buttocks.
âLooks as if this morningâs session wasnât a total waste.â Baskâs amused voice cut through the haze.
Slowly they parted. Dalton looked as dazed as she felt.
âI didnât mean to interrupt.â Bask sidestepped them on the path, motioning with his hand. âPlease, continue.â
Cassie smiled sheepishly, her heart racing out of control. They waited until Bask was a good ways down the path and out of earshot before they even looked at each other.
âWell, we blew that.â Cassieâs
