hadnât stayed at the inn last night, they were sticking large-denomination bills into the serversâ hands to pay for their breakfasts. He accepted a cup of coffee from the woman serving and sat down at Drew McCoyâs table.
âWhere were you last night?â Drew said. âWe played poker.â
âDo you have any money left?â Kyle asked.
âItâs a good thing my wife has a job,â Drew said.
âShii-yeeeet. He cleaned everyone else out,â Derrick said.
âWhereâs your wife?â
âStill sleeping. And sheâs going to sleep as long as she wants. Directly after that, sheâs going to go get a pedicure with the women and lay out by the pool with Megan Reed. Sheâs carrying my child. Thatâs enough work,â Derrick said.
Seth Taylor leaned over from a table farther away. âDoes she know you weighed almost eleven pounds when you were born?â
âHell no. And weâre not discussing that with her, are we? Weâre getting a little running in this morning instead.â Derrick pointed at his plate, which was heaped with small, puffed pancakes drizzled with syrup. âGotta run off these appleskâwhat the hell are they called?â
âAbleskivers,â Seth Taylor called out. âI need one of those pans so I can make them at home.â
âYou donât cook,â Zach said.
âOh, yes I do. Jillian loves it when I cook for her.â Seth tried to hide his smile behind one hand.
The other men, who were shoveling in food as quickly as it appeared in front of them, nodded and grunted.
Kade Harrison glanced up from his breakfast. âYou never told us where you were last night.â
âWhy the hell would you care?â Kyle asked.
âItâs always good to be in the know,â Kade said. He took a swig of orange juice.
âSophie was tired, so we both hit the sack.â
Zach Anderson glanced in Kyleâs direction and raised one eyebrow, but didnât comment. Thirty men were silent for a minute or so.
âSophie, hmm?â Tom Reed said.
Kyle had been battling for playing time with Jeff, another wide receiver, since the moment he got off the plane in Seattle. Jeff gave him a nod.
âI talked to her a little last night. Nice lady, Carlson.â He stared into Kyleâs eyes. âDonât fuck it up.â
Hoots of laughter and applause rang out from Kyleâs teammates.
âSo, who bet with Carlson this season, besides me?â Caleb asked nobody in particular.
âHeâs into it for big money,â Terrell told the room. â Big money.â
âI knew her in high school. Itâs nothing serious,â Kyle said.
This brought on even louder laughter and fist-bumps from his teammates.
âIf this keeps up, Morrisonâs going to have to take it like a man and get married too. Heâll be the only one left,â Zach said.
âCalebâs still not hitched.â
âMight as well be,â Caleb said. âWhitneyâs the one. Iâm waiting for her to graduate from college like I promised her brother, and then Iâm going to propose.â
âWhy donât you pay her tuition and get married now?â Jeff said.
Zachâs eyes narrowed. âI told my sisters that I didnât want them to marry until they graduate from college. Itâs nonnegotiable.â
âOh, now itâs on,â Derrick said. âMaybe we should change the subject.â
Kyle took another sip of coffee and cleared his throat. âSo, what are you guys up to this afternoon?â
âMaybe a nap,â Zach said.
âReed invited us to the hotel swimming pool,â Seth said.
âKendall wants to go on a hike by the river,â Drew said. âBrandon and Emily McKenna told us about it.â
Tom Reed let out a loud bark of laughter. âYou might ask them about the Cub Scout troop they met along the trail
