âWake up!â yelled White Willow Woman.
âWhat is it?â a weary Blue Elk Man yawned.
âWhere is your son?â
âHe was with you.â
âWhat is going on?â asked Walking Moon Woman. âGo back to sleep.â
âWhere is Little Grey Bear Boy?â asked a frantic White Willow Woman.
âGet some bark on the fire,â suggested Painted Turtle Man. Blue Elk Man fumbled about and tore birch bark into strips, throwing them onto the faintly glowing coals. The Grandfather Sun had not yet begun his journey and it was still very dark in the lodge. As the strips of birch bark caught flame, the lodge became illuminated.
âHeâs over there,â said Brown Shield Man, indicating a corner by Painted Turtle Manâs bedside.
âMy boy!â yelled White Willow Woman as she jumped up to retrieve her son. âWhat have you got on yourself?â
â Tansi ?â said Little Grey Bear Boy, who was covered in a greasy liquid that he had been scooping out of a leather pouch.
âNot my red clover medicine,â said Painted Turtle Man with a sigh. âIt took me days to make that much of it.â
âItâs even up his nose,â said White Willow Woman, trying to wipe the medicine off with a deer hide rag. âWill it hurt him?â
â Motch , my girl,â said Painted Turtle Man. âItâs for burns and sickness of the skin.â
Painted Turtle Man assisted White Willow Woman, but mostly in an effort to recover as much of the greasy liquid as he could.
â Moosum !â said Little Grey Bear Boy.
âYou have to stay out of my medicines, my boy,â said Painted Turtle Man. âWhen you get bigger I will begin teaching you about these things.â
âI was hoping for a good sleep,â said White Willow Woman with a yawn.
âWe might as well get the fire going,â said Painted Turtle Man, âit will not be easy to get this medicine off of him.â
âIâll take care of it,â said Blue Elk Man. âHeâs my son after all. Iâm very sorry that he disturbed your medicines.â
âHeâs just curious,â said Painted Turtle Man. âThere is nothing wrong with that.â

It was springtime and the Bear clan was gathered in their lodge enjoying their evening meal.
âYou should have told me you were going fishing,â said Blue Elk Man. âI would have come with you. It must have been difficult with the water still so cold.â
âI didnât know I would be fishing,â chuckled Brown Shield Man. âYou have your son to thank for the fish.â
âMy son?â
â Tapwe ?â
âWhat happened now?â
âI was trying to bathe him in the river,â explained White Willow Woman. âHe didnât want to bathe and as soon as his foot touched the water he used his magic to blast the water away.â
âThe entire river?â
â Motch , just the water within a tree length of him.â
âIt was something to see,â added Brown Shield Man. âThe fish were surprised and flopped around on the bottom. I ran in and grabbed them where they fell.â
âThe other women were not very happy,â said Singing Doe, sitting Flying Rabbit Boy in her lap. âThey think he is a danger to the other children.â
âHe isnât dangerous,â said Painted Turtle Man. âHe has provided us with a fine meal this evening. The others just donât understand that his gifts are a blessing.â
âOf course you always say that,â said Walking Moon Woman. âWhat if someone was hurt? What then?â
âNo one got hurt.â
âNot this time, but what about the next.â
âWe cannot live our lives fearing what might happen. We must look to the future.â
âWhat do you mean, Uncle?â asked Singing Doe. âHave you seen something?â
