Carmela. âI think we need to huddle with Mavis Sweet and pick her brain. See if sheâs remembered anything. Or else weâll have to come up with a new theory.â
âGood idea,â said Ava. âLetâs call Mavis.â
âI have a proposition for you ladies,â said Jekyl, abruptly changing the subject.
âWhatâs that?â said Ava.
âHow would you two lovelies like to transform yourselves into a pair of ghosts this coming Friday night?â
âWhy?â said Ava.
âYou mean for Halloween night?â said Carmela. âJekyl, what is it youâre asking us?â
âThe thing is,â said Jekyl, trying to look self-important, âIâm in charge of theming, decorating, and staffing the Ghost Train.â
Ava glanced at Carmela and said, âWhatâs a Ghost Train?â
âAre you serious?â said Jekyl. âThe Ghost Train is being touted as New Orleansâs premier Halloween event and has been promoted up the wazoo!â
âIâm sure,â Carmela said mildly. âNow tell us more about it.â
Jekyl drew breath and gestured expansively. âPicture this if you will. A classic old passenger train consisting of six or seven plush Pullman cars, all glammed up with Halloween décor, and running on the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad between Audubon Park and the French Quarter.â
âWait a minute,â said Ava. âYouâre asking us to
be
ghosts? And, like, ride on the train?â
âYes, I am,â said Jekyl. âBecause I think youâd both make magnificent ghosts.â
Carmela turned toward Ava. âSounds like a sell job to me.â
Jekyl held his index finger and thumb together. âIt would be a tiny favor for
moi
.â
âI hate to admit it,â said Ava, âbut it does sound kind of fun.â
Jekyl fairly beamed. âI knew I could count on you two! Now, youâre going to need costumes of course.â
âWhat?â squawked Carmela. It wasnât enough just to show up?
âAnd not just the old bedsheet over the head with two eye holes cut into it,â said Jekyl. âIâd love it if you ladies devised something really spectacular.â
âYou hear that, Carmela?â said Ava. âWeâre going to be ghosts.â
âOn the premier Ghost Train,â said Carmela, playing along.
âWhich means weâre gonna need costumes that are really spooktacular!â said Ava.
âThatâs the spirit,â said Jekyl, as he eased his way out of the shop.
âHonestly,â said Carmela, âhe does have a way of twisting your arm.â
âBut it might be fun. And Babyâs party is Wednesday night, the Pumpkins and Bumpkins Ball is on Thursday, so weâre home free on Friday, right?â
âThatâs what it looks like.â Carmela dug in her bag and pulled out her cell phone. âIâm going to call Mavis. See if we can drop by her place before we head off for the Zombie Crawl tonight.â
âGood idea,â said Ava. âThis whole Napoleonâs mask thing has got my curiosity itching.â
âYou mean burning?â
âYeah, that, too.â
Carmela punched in digits, then waited a few moments. Mavis picked up on the third ring.
âHello?â Mavis said in a shaky, tentative voice. It was obvious sheâd been receiving calls from reporters, calls from police, and probably a few crank calls.
âMavis, itâs Carmela.â
âThank goodness,â said Mavis, sounding hugely relieved. âI thought it might be another reporter.â
âI was wondering,â said Carmela, âif I could drop by and talk to you tonight? Maybe around seven?â
âJust you?â
âMy friend Ava, too.â
âThis is about the investigation?â Mavis asked.
Carmela thought for a few moments. Babcock had warned her to stay out of it, but
