couldnât control it.
By the time she neared the driveway she was calm enough to realize sheâd have to explain her sodden appearance. Not to mention her missing backpack, which sheâd left backstage, filled with the weekendâs homework assignments. As she began to think of an excuse, she looked up and stopped short. Sitting on her front step was Maria, who was staring incredulously at her phone screen.
âOh,â Charlie said. Her hand flew to her hair to smooth it. âHi. I, um . . . you found my house.â
Maria looked up and studied her, a strange expression on her face. âWhat happened to you?â she asked. She stood as Charlie approached.
âI got a little wet,â Charlie said.
Maria frowned and folded her arms. âExplain.â
âIâwell, I was working on the set for the play.â
âYeah?â
âAnd I got hot,â Charlie said carefully. It wasnât a lie.
Maria tilted her head.
âAnd, uh, I got sprayed with water, and I feel cooler now. Gotta stay hydrated here in the desert. Iâm learning.â
âIs that right?â Maria stared her down.
âYep,â Charlie said weakly. âSo, what are you doing here?â
Maria clicked her phone off and shoved it into her back pocket. âI got a text message from Kelly that the girlsâ bathroom by the auditorium exploded. And there was water everywhere.â She crossed her arms.
Charlie blinked. âOh, really?â she said, feeling the blood drain from her face. âThatâs horrible.â
Maria didnât waver. âShe said youâd been there, but you just disappeared.â When Charlie didnât offer any further comment, Maria uncrossed her arms and put her hands on her hips. âSpill it, Chuck,â she said. âIâm on to you. I know whatâs up. You might not read comics, but I do.â Her eyes threw out a challenge. âAnd I know exactly what you are.â
Charlieâs heart thudded. Her voice faltered. âY-you do?â
âPlease. Iâm not stupid,â she said. She leaned forward, a joking smile playing at her lips, and said quietly, âYouâre a superhero.â
CHAPTER 16
The Secretâs Out
âI âm aâwhat?â Charlie said, and then she laughed in spite of her situation because the thought was so ridiculous. âNo, I donât think so.â
âIâm serious,â Maria said, with mock sincerity. âYou know what I meanâyouâre, like, what do you call it? Emerging. Just realizing your powers, like Peter Parker after he gets bitten but before he figures out heâs Spider-Man.â She punched Charlie lightly in the arm. âI canât believe this is happening right here in our little town. Superheroes usually live in big cities. . . .â She trailed off, scratching her head. âHey . . . youâre from a big city.â She wagged her eyebrows. âSee what I mean?â
âMaria, stop.â
Maria narrowed her eyes. âOkay.â She studied Charlie for a long moment, and then tilted her head in earnest. âWait, though. The more I think about it . . . and you . . . and the strange things youâre doing . . .â She paused, deep in thought. âNooo,â she whispered. And then slowly she said, âBut . . . seriously. Do you have any other explanation for the weird things that are happening?â
Charlie dropped her gaze and didnât answer.
âHave you always been able to run really fast?â Maria asked. âAnd heal overnight? And . . . and did you break the bathroom? I mean, look at you.â Her voice softened. âYou can trust me.â
Charlie stared hard at the driveway. âI donât know what you mean.â
âCome on,â Maria said, putting her hand on Charlieâs arm. âWere you born like this? Or did something, you know, happen to you? Is that why you moved
