thought, like the decision was a tough one that could go either way.
âYes, I accept your apologies. I still havenât heard from Sarah about this issue.â
âWell, let me tell youâSarah is absolutely devastated. She feels worse than Nic and me put together.â That didnât really come out sounding right. âShe feels absolutely horrible, Whitney! And sheâs told us what a great friend you are, how sweet and kind you are, and how youâd never treat anyone this way. Which is why she canât even bear to face you. Trust me. This is breaking her heart.â
âThatâs true. Devastated is a good word to describe Sarah right now,â added Nicole. âCanât you tell?â
Whitney didnât say anything. We looked up when the screen door opened. Sarah was about to walk in when she saw the three of us inside talking. She did a quick U-turn and started out the door.
âWhere do you think youâre going? Come back here!â I shouted.
Sarah looked over her shoulder at me. âIâm going to the bathroom. Is that okay with you?â
âNo, itâs not. I want you to come inside so we can settle this.â
Sarah let the door close behind her, and she stood in front of us. No one said a word. Sarah stared at the floor, Whitney looked expectantly at Sarah, and Nic had a strange look on her faceâlike she was about to burst out laughing.
âSarah! Say something!â I urged.
Sarah wouldnât look up. âI donât know what to say.â
âHow can you not know what to say? Why donât you tell me youâre sorry?â Whitney blurted out.
Sarah looked at her. âI am sorry! Iâve never been so sorry in my life. Iâm the worst person in the world. You have every right to hate me and never speak to me again.â
âI donât hate you! But why havenât you talked to me for five days?â
Sarah covered her face with her hands. âHow could I?â
I looked at Nic and nodded toward the door. Nic followed me outside without a word. We were halfway down Middler Line when she finally spoke up. âWhat got into you?â
I looked at her. âI donât know. Think I should open my own practice?â
Nic burst out laughing.
âYou had the weirdest look on your faceâlike you thought this whole situation was really funny,â I said.
Nic shook her head. âI didnât think it was funny. I just thought it was going to be major drama. Why did you make us leave? I wanted to stay and watch the whole thing.â
âI thought they needed to be alone. This is the first time theyâve spoken to each other in almost a week,â I said.
We walked down to the dining hall to wait for lunch to begin.
Half an hour later Whitney and Sarah showed up at Cabin 3âs table for lunch, along with the rest of us. They both had red eyes and blotchy faces. Whatever had happened between them, it must have been pretty intense.
After lunch ended, the two of them were walking together through the crowd of people leaving the dining hall. It didnât look like they were going to make a point of filling me in on everything, which I didnât think was very fair, considering Iâd played a pretty big role in it all. So I rushed up to them.
âOkay, I hate to be rude, but canât you at least tell me what happened?â I asked.
Whitney smiled at me. âWeâre friends again!â
âFinally!â I turned to Nic, whoâd walked up beside me. âThey made up.â
âDarcy, you were right. All along, if I had just talked to her, it never wouldâve dragged out for so long. I canât believe I was so stupid,â said Sarah.
âYouâre not stupid!â Whitney protested. âYou were just embarrassed. And you avoided the problem instead of facing it and trying to solve it. Itâs okay, though. Weâve worked everything
