try.â
TWENTY-SEVEN
Hargrove stopped at our booth, another man behind him. He was younger, looked uncomfortable in his suit, like he hadnât been out of uniform for very long.
âEddie,â he said. âLooks like your Gunsel is in for another visit.â
âYouâre gettinâ older, Hargrove,â I said. âOr are your partners gettinâ younger?â
âProbably a little bit of both,â he said. âYou mind if I sit down?â
âSure, why not?â I asked. âHave a cup of coffee. Want me to slide over?â
âNo.â He grabbed a chair from another table. âThis is good.â
His partner just sat at a chair at the table behind us. He knew his place, already.
âKeep eatinâ, fellas,â Hargrove said. âI donât want to ruin your breakfast.â
âThanks.â
âWhereâs your other buddy? Bardini?â
âHe doesnât check in with me every day.â
âNo, huh? Off on a case maybe? Already?â
I shrugged.
âI talked to a colleague of mine yesterday,â Hargrove said. âFreeman. Know him?â
âI know Freeman.â
âSeems you and the Gunsel, here, got yourselves involved in another murder.â
âWeâre not involved,â I said.
âYour buddy Bardini is.â
âHe just found the body, thatâs all,â I said. âHe was lookinâ for a missinâ person, and he found him dead.â
âHe was workinâ for you, though.â
âNot me,â I said. âBing Crosby.â
âYeah,â Hargrove said, âanother one of your Hollywood bigwig buddies. But in the end he was working for you.â
I looked at him.
âItâs not gonna do me any good to keep sayinâ no, right?â
âRight.â
âSo what do you want, Hargrove?â I asked. âThis isnât your case.â
âIâm helping my friend Freeman,â he said, âsince I know some of the principals involved.â
âThatâs us, right?â Jerry asked.
âSmart boy.â
There was an empty cup on the table. Hargrove poured himself a cup of coffee.
âHeard you fellas found a body out in Red Rock Canyon, too,â he said.
âNow I know thatâs not your case,â I said. âStill helpinâ some friends?â
âNaw, I donât know those Sheriffâs men,â Hargrove said, sipping his coffee. âI just find it interesting how you guys always stumble across bodies when youâre together.â
âNot always,â I said.
âEnough.â
I ate the last of my pancakes, pushed the plate away.
âWhatâs this about, Hargrove?â I asked.
âIâm just curious, Eddie,â he said. âI was going to ask you the same question.â
âAll I know is what I told the Sheriffâs boys, and what I told your boys. Bing Crosby needed some help, we tried to give it to him.â
âThen why the Gunsel?â Hargrove asked.
I saw a muscle jump in Jerryâs jaw, but he covered it with a mouthful of pancakes.
âActually, Bing met Jerry at Del Mar last year and was impressed with his knowledge of horses. When his trainer didnât show up he asked me if Jerry would take a look at the horse for him. Jerry agreed, and Bing flew him out.â
âHeâs coverinâ my expenses,â Jerry said. Then he did something Iâd never seen him do before. He smiled at Detective Hargrove. âHe put me in a suite.â
âNice,â Hargrove said. âA free flight, free suite, and free pancakes, huh?â
âYou got it,â Jerry said.
âPretty good deal,â Hargrove said, then looked at me and asked, âbut are we sure Crosby didnât bring Jerry in to off the horse owner?â
âOh yeah,â I said, âBing made an appointment to meet the guy. Then we showed up and clubbed him to death
