guitar, the blanket, the full moon, it was all just a setup?â
âI didnât have much to do with the moon, but besides thatâyes.â
She smiled. âGood.â
We looked into each otherâs eyes, then simultaneously leaned forward and kissed for the first time. I donât remember the sequence of events after that, but it was all a pleasant blur. The softness and warmth of her body against mine, the happy sighs. The feeling of perfect contentment. An hour later our fire was dead and the temperatures had fallen well below freezing, too cold even for our body heat. So I started the car, and while Macy warmed up inside, I shoveled snow onto the fire pit. Then we drove back down to the valley. On the drive back I said, âSalt Lake has such great canyons. You and Joette must come up here all the time.â
âNo, we never come. Jo had something terrible happen up here.â
âIn Big Cottonwood Canyon?â
âHer little girl fell into the creek and drowned.â
I turned and looked at her. âWhere we just were?â
âNo, itâs a campsite a little ways up.â
âHow long ago was that?â
âAbout five years ago. Just before I met her.â
âIâm sorry. I should have asked before I took you there.â
âNo, itâs okay. Iâve been up there before. I just donât come up with Jo, and I wonât tell her about us coming here tonight. Itâs not like sheâd be mad or anything, it would just remind her.â She turned to me. âSo if she asks, tell her we went to Liberty Park.â
âLiberty Park,â I repeated. â Will she ask where we went?â
âMost definitely. You should know sheâs very protective of me. Sheâll be waiting up. Thatâs just the way she is.â
âThatâs nice,â I decided.
âYeah. It is.â She turned to me. âIâve been meaning to ask youâwhat are you doing for Thanksgiving?â
âWatching TV. Probably eating a TV dinner.â
âThatâs pathetic. Come have dinner with us. Itâs going to be great this year. This is the first year in ten years Joette has the holiday off.â
âPeople eat at Dennyâs on Thanksgiving Day?â I asked.
âThanksgivingâs a big day at Dennyâs. They have a turkey, mashed potatoes and dressing special with a piece of pumpkin pie for just $7.99. Itâs not bad.â
I thought Macy sounded a little like an advertisement. In spite of her glowing review, I found the idea of eating Thanksgiving dinner there a little depressing. Of course someone who was planning on spending Thanksgiving at home with a Hungry-Man turkey dinner shouldnât cast stones. Or, at least, cranberry sauce.
âWill Joette mind if I crash your dinner?â I asked.
âOf course not. She likes you.â
âShe doesnât know me.â
âBetter than you think. I tell her everything.â
It was past midnight when I pulled in to Macyâs driveway. The lights were still on inside the house. I killed the engine.
âThank you for taking me out,â she said. âIt was fun.â
âThank you for going. It was fun. Especially the kissing part,â I added.
She smiled. âThat was fun.â She looked into my eyes. âMay I ask you something personal?â
âSure.â
âWhen we first met, you told me your girlfriend had just dropped you. Were you serious about her?â
âI donât know.â I looked at Macy and smiled. âI guess thatâs the answer. If you donât know if youâre serious, youâre not. She wanted to get married.â
âAnd you?â
âWe talked about it. Weâd dated forever, like four years. I just didnât know if she was the one. Youâd think after four years youâd know.â
âI think after four years you would have left if she wasnât. So
