the couch.” He guided her to the worn furniture.
Karla and Nate, along with Aric and Mason, walked in. Mason handed Ellie a bottle of water. Karla asked Mason if he got ahold of Emma. He said she and Jordan would be there soon. The girls would be able to help Ellie, too. Their mates would help the boys.
Caleb watched Karla and Nate. He couldn’t believe they were at the hospital when their children had been kidnapped. But then, there was nothing they could do right now. The note left at their house made it clear what was demanded. Plus, they had their cell phones if the abductor called. He was glad they were all together. They would need each other to get through this.
As the final members of the family arrived, a female in scrubs came to the waiting room corner. “Is the Wolfe family here?” Everyone turned to her.
Aric stepped forward. “We’re the sons and our mates. What can you tell us about them?”
The doctor didn’t look happy. “Both your mother and father were in bad shape when they came in. Lots of internal bleeding, some broken bones. Your father was conscious and able to shift to heal his more serious injuries. He’s in recovery where we can keep an eye on him, but he’s stable.
“What about Mom?” Aric’s words came softly, as if afraid to know the answer.
“Your mom has a major concussion, keeping her unconscious. We had to take immediate action to stop her internal bleeding and brain swelling. Surgery went well, but we’re keeping her in an induced coma to let her body continue to heal faster through her other half. We don’t want her human side fighting the other side.
“Depending how quickly she recovers, we’ll bring her out of the coma as soon as we can. We’re hoping about eight hours or so. Then she can shift to take care of most everything remaining. She’s in ICU, critical, but stable.”
“When can we see our father?”
“A couple of you at a time can see him. We want to keep him overnight for observation, but one of the nurses said he was already fighting that. He said he has something he absolutely has to attend tonight.” The doctor looked around the group. “If any of you can convince him to stay, that would be great. He’ll be okay if he leaves, more than likely, but I’d rather keep him to be sure.”
Aric nodded. “We’ll do our best.”
“That’s all I can ask. I’ll be here tomorrow morning for rounds if any of you have any questions.” She turned and walked down the corridor, disappearing around a corner.
Everyone found a seat and sat with their own thoughts.

    EIGHTEEN

In the hospital waiting room, Ellie examined each of her brothers to make sure everyone had themselves under control. Especially Nathan. With his babies missing and Mom and Dad in serious condition, she worried he was under too much stress. But all her brothers were born alphas, strong in mind, body, and spirit.
Aric stood and grabbed Jordan’s hand. He walked up to the busy nurses’ station and asked for Dad’s room number. The nurse told him 409, around the corner. They headed off. That nurse picked up files from the desk and headed toward the elevator down the other hall.
Mason glanced at each of the others, took Emma’s hand and told the new nurse who just walked in they were going to their father’s room. She said fine, and they kept walking like nothing was askew.
Ellie looked at Nate, mouth gaping. Nate grabbed Karla and hauled her to the same nurse and asked for Mr. Wolfe’s room. The nurse pivoted to the computer screen and looked up room 409 and Nate thanked her and walked away.
The station’s phone rang, which the nurse picked up and turned to the computer, putting her back to the waiting room once again. Caleb nodded at Ellie and they both walked with purpose past the desk and around the corner.
When Ellie pushed the door open, laughter rang out in the room. She shushed them and dragged Caleb in and closed the door. Their dad looked a little
