unwavering.
“We did what we said we’d do. We hunted Mason down and we killed him,” he said.
The reaction around the table was varied. Charlie gasped, Teresa covered her mouth with her hands in horror. Agnes and Gretchen looked at each other with sad eyes while Lash looked grim but relieved too. Sarah reached over and held Zane’s hand in hers.
“You did what you had to do Zane,” she said on behalf of everyone.
Lash leaned back in his chair, surveying the group and nodded. “We did. Zane and I have agreed that you don’t need all the details. But just know that Mason won’t be able to hurt anyone ever again. This gives Sarah a fighting chance against Charles and it means we won’t have to be watching our backs constantly.”
Zane nodded his head in agreement. “Lash is right. We’re on firmer ground now. We have our lines which are holding perfectly. We’re safe from Mason and now all we have to do is wait him out. He’s laying siege to us, because that’s all he can do to us now.”
Sarah winced. That wasn’t the way she saw it at all. Neither did Agnes from the way she was shaking her head, her long gray and white hair dancing with the motion.
“Zane, don’t fall into the trap of underestimating this man. He’s a monster and he’s obsessed. And now, he’s furious. He’s also incredibly powerful. You’re right, the lines are holding, but that gives us just enough time to come up with a plan before he finds a way to break through and take our girl from us.”
Sarah closed her eyes and nodded in agreement. Agnes was right. Gretchen took a sip of water and tried to smile at her son. “Zane honey, you had to know this couldn’t be fixed so easily. We’re in the fight of our lives. And it’s not over. Last night I had a dream,” she said, biting her lip and looking down at her hands, her long golden hair, hiding her face for a moment.
Zane sat up in his chair, looking tense. “Was it the same? Was she running through the forest? Was she caught?” he demanded, his eyes turning bright silver.
Gretchen looked up and shook her head. “ No , it’s changed. We’ve changed the future. She’s no longer lost. She’s found. No this dream was different. Sarah’s in a dark room, sitting on a chair and Charles comes in with a knife. Candles surround her and she’s lifted up almost to the ceiling, but then the entire room explodes in light and when it fades, you’re the one lying on the ground.”
Agnes sighed as she watched her daughter’s tormented face. “If we can change fate once, we can change it again. Let’s put your dream on the backburner for now and let’s come up with a plan to end this. None of us want to live the rest of our lives trapped here as much as we enjoy being in Maine. Charles shouldn’t have the power to control us and keep us caged. No, we have to move forward. Lash, it was your idea to go after Mason. What do you think should happen next?”
Lash looked surprised that Agnes would ask him his opinion, but regrouped immediately and smiled grimly. “We do the same thing. Charles is mad about the lines, true, but he still thinks he has us scared. He thinks we’re going to hide behind our walls, waiting for his next move. I say we take the initiative and get him first.”
Everyone sat up in surprise and conversations exploded around the table. Agnes held her hand up for silence and everyone quieted down immediately.
“It’s brilliant Lash. One problem though. It would be a suicide mission.”
Sarah nodded her head quickly. “I don’t want anyone risking their lives for me. What Lash and Zane did last night was enough. There has to be another way,” she said, and paused as she felt a little speed bump feeling inside her mind.
Sarah grinned suddenly. “I say we start trying to contact other witches from around the world. I say we call for back up. He’s such a monster, there has to be other witches who want him put out of commission too. I say we figure
