all.â
âToo bad,â Nancy muttered. âNow weâll never find out whoââ
âHang on a sec,â Dirk interrupted. âThe print belongs to somebody named Felix Frankson.â His voice was grave. âFrankson is an escaped murderer, Nancy. Heâs wanted by the FBI!â
Chapter
Fourteen
W OW !â N ED WHISTLED shrilly when Nancy hung up the phone and told him what Dirk had said. âIt sounds like this man Frankson has a lot on the line. No wonder he was willing to go after you!â
The door opened and Chief Saunders came in without knocking, his hat in his hand. He stood for a minute in the door, looking at Nancy, his blue eyes carefully guarded.
âAll right,â he said finally, âIâve decided to let you go. Whenever the doctor releases you, you can leave.â
Nancy nodded. âDid you hear what Dirk Bowman told me?â
âI heard,â the chief said. âI aim to get on this in a hurry.â He glared at Nancy. âAnd I donât want you to try to pull any funny stuff. This is serious businessâ police business. I donât need any kids messing things up.â He jammed his hat on his head. âYou stay out, you hear? I wonât be responsible if you get yourself hurt again.â
âListen, Ned,â Nancy said urgently as soon as the chief had left the room. âMr. Carlton ought to know whatâs going on. Thereâs no proof, but it looks as if Felix and Mike killed Darla. Brenda could be next. Letâs call him at home.â She picked up the phone and began to dial.
âIsnât it risky calling the house?â Ned asked. âBrenda might answer.â
âYouâre right,â Nancy said. âBut itâs Saturday, so Mr. Carlton wonât be at the office. If Brenda answers, Iâll hang up.â
But it was the Carlton maid who answered the phone and told them that Mr. Carlton was still out of town. âHeâs not expected back until later today,â she said. âIs there any message?â
Nancy bit her lip, frowning. âNo, no message,â she said. She had to talk to Mr. Carlton himself.
âThe next step,â she told Ned as she hung up the phone, âis getting out of this hospital.â
âYouâre sure youâre okay?â Ned asked. Nancycould see the worry in his eyes, and she squeezed his hand. It was wonderful to know that Ned cared for her.
âIâm sure,â she said confidently. âAll we have to do is to convince the doctor.â
That was harder than Nancy thought. The doctor came in with an X ray in his hand to tell her that she could go home the next day.
âTomorrow!â Nancy exclaimed. âThatâs just not possible. And anyway,â she fibbed, âonce I get home Iâll go straight to bed.â
The doctor held up the X ray and looked at it for a long time. Finally he said, âWell, I guess I donât see any real damage. If youâll promise to get plenty of rest, you can go.â
âI promise,â Nancy said. She would get some rest, she told herself, except that it probably wouldnât be right away.
Ned and Nancy drove back to River Heights in Nedâs car, leaving Nancyâs Mustang in the Ford shop in Batesville for repairs to its front end. On the trip back, Nancy tried to puzzle out the complicated relationships in this case, but after a while she dozed a little, still feeling the effects of the bump on her head.
âWake up, Nancy,â Ned said, shaking her gently. âWeâre home.â
Nancy stretched and blinked, looking at her watch. âItâs five. Letâs call Mr. Carlton.â
But Mr. Carlton was calling her, as Nancy discovered the minute she came in the door.
âNancy, are you okay?â Hannah demanded. She was in the hall, the phone in one hand.
âIâm fine,â Nancy said. She nodded at the phone. âIs that for
