theyâve never seen before, or elseââ
Jonny Frankenstein appeared in the doorway and looked at Megan.
âHey, Jonny,â said Megan. âWe were just talking to Falcon aboutââ
âListen. They got this dance thing,â said Jonny. âThis Monstersâ Bash. You wanna go?â
Falcon wanted to interrupt, wanted to tell Megan that heâd wanted to ask her to the bash. But it appeared as if Falcon had lost his chance.
âMe?â said Megan. âGo to theâ?â
âYou donât have to,â Jonny said. âIf you donât want to.â
âNo, Iâd love to go,â said Megan. She looked at Pearl, then Destynee. âThatâd beâgreat!â
âYeah,â said Jonny, then left. A moment later they heard him starting to play the guitar in his room.
âNo oneâs taking me to any dance,â said Destynee. âNot now.â
Megan looked thoughtfully at Falcon. âWhy donât you go with her, Falcon?â she said. âYou donât have a date yet, do you?â
Falcon felt the blood rushing to his cheeks. The last thing in the world he wanted to do was to take Destynee to the Monstersâ Bash, and not because he had a problem with her being a giant slug, either. It was because she had been so rude to him before, back when she thought she was a high and mighty vampire-to-be. She was the kind of girl he had liked the least, back in Cold River, the kind who viewed the world as a pyramid, with herself on the top and everyone else on the bottom.
âItâs okay,â said Destynee. âYou donât have to take me.â She sighed sadly. â I wouldnât take me, if I had the choice.â
Falcon thought, I bet thatâs true. She wouldnât.
Megan was looking at Falcon with an intense expression. Falcon could tell that she was trying to send him a message. Take her , she was saying. Take her.
âIâd be glad to take you,â Falcon heard himself say.
âSeriously?â said Destynee. Her face filled with hope. âWould you really?â
âSure,â said Falcon, with almost no passion whatsoever. âThat would be really fun.â
âWhat about you, Pearl?â said Megan. âDo you have a date for tonight?â
La Chupakabra began to buzz. âIndeed,â she said. âI have accepted an invitation!â
âAre you going to tell us who it is?â said Megan. âOr do we have to guess?â
âFor now, it shall remain a secret,â said Pearl. âA secret that shall be unveiled, in the fullness of time!â
âOh my god, oh my god,â said Destynee. âThis is excellent!â She looked excitedly at Megan, then Pearl. âOkay. Well, now we have to get ready. How long until the bash? We have so much to do!â
Falcon understood that it was time for him to excuse himself, so he got up and left the girls to their own devices. As he walked through the parlor, Quimby gave him a hard look.
âI spy with my little eye,â he said. âSomethingâ doomed .â
Falcon walked into his room without responding and lay down on his bunk. Jonny was on the bottom bunk across the room from him, playing his guitar. For a moment Falcon just lay on his back, looking at the underside of theupper bunk. Lincoln Pugh was above him, softly snoring.
Suddenly Falcon realized that the room had gotten quiet. Jonny had stopped playing and was looking at Falcon curiously. âSo, whatâd you get?â he said.
âNothing,â said Falcon softly. âI didnât get anything.â
There was silence for a moment. Then Jonny said, âMeaning what?â
âMeaning,â said Falcon, âthey donât know what I am. They canât figure me out. Either Iâm something they canât identify or elseâI might not be a monster at all. Iâm a mystery.â
