mystical mumbo jumbo after all. âCan I ask another question?â
âBe my guest.â
He picked up the cards again, this time closing his eyes. âWhen will it happen?â
He waited for another number to appear in his mind. Thirty-three. Okay, so maybe thirty-three would be the only number that ever came to his mind. That was fine with him. He shuffled the deck more slowly this time, turning over the top card when he was done. The card was upside down. âNine of Wands,â he read aloud, checking out the illustration of a peasant in tights alongside a cart loaded with nine long pieces of wood. He looked at his cousin expectantly.
âWell . . .â she began hesitantly.
âWhat?â Michael was growing alarmed. âWhat is it?â
âReversed, the Nine of Wands indicates obstacles, adversity, delays. Lots of problems, lots of barriers to overcome.â She winced. âSorry.â
âI knew these cards were bullshit,â Michael muttered darkly.
âIt doesnât mean youâre not going to get her,â Gemma assured him. âItâs just not going to be easy.â
âGreat.â Michael sulked.
Gemmaâs gaze was sympathetic. âYou really like her, donât you?â
âYeah, I really do,â said Michael. âSheâs smart and funny. A little bit cranky, too, but thatâs okay, I can cope with cranky. And sheâs gorgeousâ Madonnâ . . .â
âWell, then youâve got to have faith itâs going to work out.â Gemma began putting the cards back in their velvet bag. âWhat does Anthony think of her?â
Michael pulled a tortured face. âDonât get me started on Anthony.â
âWhat? Why?â
He told Gemma all about Danteâs, including Theresaâs suggestions and his brotherâs reluctance to change anything.
âYou have to go easy with Anthony, Michael. Heâs very sensitive.â
âWho isnât?â Michael scoffed.
âI mean about the restaurant in particular.â
âWell, so am I.â
âItâs different. Danteâs has been his whole life. Heâs poured his guts into it. Now all of a sudden you step in and want to change things around? No wonder heâs upset.â
âAre you saying I donât have a right to improve things?â Michael demanded, feeling defensive.
âNot at all. Iâm just saying be sensitive to his feelings. Youâve seen and done things he never has, maybe never will. Heâs jealous of you. All heâs ever had is Danteâs, and heâs afraid youâre somehow going to take it away from him. Be gentle with him, Mike.â
âYeah, yeah, I will,â Michael promised. He found the idea that Anthony might be jealous of him bizarre, but he supposed it could be true. All those times Anthony got on his ass about being a wussy college boy and a dumb jock . . . Michael always assumed it was Anthonyâs way of putting him down. But now he saw there might be a different way to interpret it.
The incense was starting to make his temples throb. Hopping down from his stool, he leaned in to kiss his cousinâs cheek. âI should run. Iâve got a million things to do today.â
âWait. Let me give you something.â
Gemma hustled out from behind the counter and went to the front of the store, returning with two large, thick candles, one white, one red. âBurn them and think thoughts of Theresa. Theyâre to attract love.â
âDonât you have a spell I can recite or something?â Michael ribbed.
âI do, but I know you wonât do it.â
Squirming with embarrassment, Michael gently thrust the candles back at his cousin. âI canât take these, Gemma.â
âAfraid you might get what you want?â she asked, refusing to take them back from him.
âNo, afraid people might think Iâm a total
