nod. She snuggles in close to me. I turn off the TV and we lie together in the dark until we both fall asleep.

The harder part was telling my father.

I caught him when he was coming into the house from the hospital.

I didn’t ask him to sit down or anything. “Joanna’s pregnant.”

He put his jacket on the back of the couch. “Son, you didn’t think to use a condom?”

“Hm, let’s see, in between planning to kidnap my rebellious stepsister and actually kidnapping my rebellious stepsister…no, condoms never crossed my mind.”

“You can’t have a baby right now,” he said in a matter-of-fact tone.

“You’re suggesting that I tell her to abort the baby? Oh, that’s just rich. Do you not understand what I, what we did to her? She just said that this is the thing that will finally make her get her life together and you want to take that away?

“Son, it shouldn’t be up for discussion.”

    “But it is.”

I stood my ground with my father. “I can’t do that to her. I won’t. You’re having a grandkid. I can support the kid, I’m not asking you for anything, but we can’t do this to her. She’s doing well.”

    “I don’t like this.”

“And I didn’t like that you asked me to assault Joanna, but I did it and I’m living with the consequences of that. Maybe you should too.”

I left out of the room before he could say another word. I see why my mother left him.

For the first time in over a year and a half, Isabella opens her eyes. She looks around, trying to get a sense of her surroundings. Her voice doesn’t work yet, but a flash of recognition crosses her eyes when she sees the three of us at her bed side.

My father takes her hand in his and begins to cry. “I missed you so much.” Joanna is holding our newborn son Conner in her arms, and introduces him to his grandmother. “Mom, look, it’s your grandson.”

Isabella tries to register some shock on her face, and almost comes close.

“Nurse!!!! She’s awake!!” My father yells. The nurse comes into the room and begins to check Isabella’s vitals.

“I’m so glad we never gave up hope,” my dad says.

“You not giving up on her is powerful in and of itself,” the nurse adds. “Even if she isn’t conscious, she knows that you were there for her. That’s invaluable.”

He walks ahead of us, ear attached to his cell phone because he’s calling everyone to let them know that Isabella is awake.

“We still have a long road ahead of us,” Joanna says.

“She’ll be good as new in no time.”

“She will. And then she can play with her grandson.” She kisses Conner on the forehead.

“And have a better relationship with her daughter as well,” I add.

    “Yeah, definitely.”

It was a long hard road for Isabella to get better. She had to relearn everything — how to walk, how to talk; she had to get her motor skills back in shape, and her physical self in shape as well, because she experienced muscle atrophy from lying in the bed for all of that time.

She wasn’t 100% until Conner had started walking and getting potty trained. She beamed with pride when he made some awkward steps towards her, sitting in her wheelchair; she held her hands out for him and he fell into them, laughing. They clutched one another tightly and she kissed him on the cheek.

Joanna was finishing up dinner in our apartment. Connor was asleep in his bed.

I closed the door quietly and put my stuff up from work.

“How was school today?” I asked her.

“It was fine, I only had one class today.” She turned the stove on low. “It’ll be another hour.”

I smirked at her. “Good.” I grabbed her around her waist and pulled her in for a kiss. She squealed slightly as she slipped her tongue into my mouth. Our tongues danced around one another. My dick grew hard.

    I picked her up and
