the blood. Then, abrupt l y , he shoved him awa y . “I guess we have a deal.” Thalius s wiped his cheek with the back of his hand, effectiv el y covering it with blood. I have to get out of here … soon.
“Tonight, as the blue m oon crosses the path of the purple m oon, y o u need to be at the entrance of To m bs. The m oons will hide the disturbance of y o ur freedom and renewed powers. Y ou have a week to bring her to m e. Meet m e in the F orest of Li m bs before m idnig h t on the last da y .”
He turned to Jager, his voice as cold as a to m b. “If y ou fail with this a s sig n m ent, y o u w on’t need to w or r y about co m ing back to To m bs; y ou w on’t have a life. Now, escort m e out this w retched place.”
Cha p ter Thirteen
Kerrigan m a ter i ali z ed in the living room area of this parents’ ho m e and waited for his m other. “I’m in here,” he called out.
Paddy turned toward his voice and walked into the room to sit on the loveseat. “ D id y ou real l y have to vanish in front of Meeka like that? The poor girl has seen enough oddities in one hour to last a nor m al person a life time.”
Kerrigan sat d o wn in the large chair across from his m other and let a large breath of air escape his lungs. “I don’t kn o w w hat’s up with me. I’m not m y s e lf around her. I seem to be able to feel ever y t h i n g she feels.”
He could see the concern on his m other’s face. He alw a y s had the abili t y to close his mind and feelings off to eve r y o ne — a l m ost ever y o n e. He s eld o m sh o wed sig n s of caring.
Todd wandered into the room and scratched his da m p fur, which was quick l y dr y i n g due to a m agic spell.
Kerrigan looked up at his father. His little brown e y es were half their nor m a l size. He looked exhausted.
He s hook his head at his father. “ D ad, y ou have been up there w a y too long. Look at y o u; y o u’ r e dead on y o ur feet.”
Todd walked over to Pad d y and kissed her little n o se.
“Still telling m e how to do my job, son, or w a s it a suggestion that I can’t do my j o b ? ” Kerrigan let out a fr u strated sigh. “Dad, I’m j u st t r y i ng to do my job.”
“I know, s on. I don’t kn o w w h y I failed y ou where the two interlopers were concerned. I gue s s I wasn’t m y s e lf, either. What did the Cou n selors decide ? ”
“Those old crones underest i m a te m e if they think th e y can order m e to do their bidding. I’ve been the Enforcer for over 180 y e a r s! Who do th e y think they are to be giving m e orde r s ? ”
Todd’s tail began to thu m p, a t y p i c a l action when worried. “What is my punish m ent, and w hat are w e do to with the girl and her…urr…cat ? ”
“I told the Council there would be no punish m e n t for y o u . You have kept their little fortress of Enchantment a secret for longer than m ost Enchanters can count.”
Paddy intervened. “ O ur guests are both awake and w ell. Catz is a cha r m ing being from a s pecies call L e m rens. The fe m a l e hu m an is absolute l y adorable. But Kerrigan is having a problem with her. It’s m a k ing him test y .”
“Mo m , it’s not a proble m . I just seem to be unable to clear my m ind and close it when she is near m e. I just need m ore sleep.”
Todd looked at the bedroo m . “ Well, I would like to m e e t these visitors.”
Paddy j u m ped in front of him instant l y with a tsk tsk . “Not right n o w. The poor girl needs her rest, j u st like the two of y o u .”
“Mo m ’s right, Dad. She had a s hower, and the bath br u sh scared her to death, then she had to learn my m other and father were beavers. She knows I’m al m ost two hundred y e ars old, and s he discovered she’s a fl a m e thrower.”
Todd’s w hiskers twitched with a s m i l e. “ I suppose that w ould pret t y m uch do a n y o ne in.” “The Cou n selors are interested in her. Meeka has special powers. Mind-control
