them like
they’d never been fucked before. If it were three a.m., oh yeah, I’d do it.
They’d brought me to that beast level. Thank god the sun blazed in the sky and
my partners crowded the parking lot.
Jazmine rushed forward with her hand over her mouth. Her
face was pale despite the spray-on tan that usually made it glow. Her gaze
drifted back and forth between me, the destruction and the rising black smoke.
“Frank. What happened? How did this happen?”
“Don’t know. For now they’ve got to get the fire out, then
the detectives and firefighters’ll perform an investigation.” I started to
reach for Jazmine but Gio pulled her out of my reach.
Giovanna glanced at me. Her plump mouth—the mouth that had
given me such fantastic head—curved downward in a scowl. I could tell she had
her teeth clenched because a muscle in her jaw tensed just as it used to when
we’d have a quarrel. Only now her dark eyes flashed with a much higher degree
of hostility.
“Don’t you touch her, you cheating prick.”
I released the air that had been trapped in my lungs. “What
the fuck is this about? Not an hour or so ago we’d all been wrapped up in bed
together. Was it the arrest? If so, that was a stupid-ass prank they—”
“I heard you through the window. Saw you with…with them. You
kissed her.” Jazmine eyed the circle of cops. Ah. Now my suspicions were
confirmed. She’d seen and heard our conversation therefore Leah and Ned were the problem.
I shook my head. “No. That’s not what happened. Well I’m
sure it appeared that way but it’s not what you think.”
But Jaz and Gio must not’ve seen me stalk away from Leah and
Ned this morning and throw over my shoulder, “Fuck you both. The joke is on
you. Did you really think I’d ever crawl back into your bed after you ditched
me? And after you burst into my apartment and ruined the best night of
my life?”
I heard the buzz of the crowd forming around the perimeter.
Yet I didn’t care who heard my conversation with these two, one that no doubt
was about to escalate into an all-out shouting match.
Gio held Jaz’s arm. She stood behind my ex, her mouth
against Jaz’s ear. “He’s lying. You know he is. You heard him down on the
street planning to get back with them. He’s trying to manipulate you because—”
“That’s a lie.” I fisted my hands. My pulse leaped into
action. I wasn’t going to let Gio get away with this. “Jaz, would you just
listen to me? She’s manipulating you . Either that or she’s
completely fucking mistaken.”
Gio wrapped her arms around Jazmine from behind. Her smile
reeked with chilly retaliation and her sharp gaze seemed to spear me right in
the heart. “Uh, no. I heard the whole thing too. I saw the kiss, listened to
all the laughter, heard you agree to screw around with them again. And all the while
me and Jazmine were upstairs worrying that you were being dragged off to jail?
What a son of a bitch.”
Hm. So Gio’s feelings had been hurt too. She operated on
betrayal and worked on swaying Jaz into her corner.
What a mess I’d made of things.
“Listen, both of you. It is not true. It’s not what
you think. Please. Both of you stop this. Give me a chance to explain.” I held
Jaz’s gaze, hoping my eyes told the real truth and she’d remember what we’d had
in the past. Maybe she’d believe me and sway Gio instead of the other way around.
“Jaz. Sweetheart. Don’t let her do this to us before you know the whole story.
She’s—”
“No. Don’t let him do this to us . I’m sure he
saw our video. It was hot.” Gio pulled Jazmine a few more steps away from me.
“Too hot for him to let us go now. That’s why he’s changed his mind
about being with Leah and Ned. Our video is why. We showed him what he’d be
missing.”
I shoved my fingers through my hair. But I wanted to pull
every strand out. “No. That is not true. Jazmine, honey. It was a joke.
All a joke, not—”
    “Well, well,
