He smiled at her warmly and sat on the
low stool that was on wheels. “Hello Miss Bishop, I’m Dr. Stewart.”
He reached out his hand to her and Laurel shook the doctor’s
hand.
“ Let’s see what we’ve got
here,” he said looking down at her chart. “It’s been three years
since your last pap smear?”
“ Yes,” she
answered.
“ And I see here that you
have never been sexually active. Why is that,” he asked cocking his
head to one side.
Laurel was shocked that he was asking
her this, but she answered, “I haven’t had time.”
“ You haven’t had time for
a sexual relationship, Laurel?”
“ No, I haven’t,” she
snapped. What difference did it make to him?
“ I see,” he grinned.
Directing his gaze to his nurse he said, “This will require the
extensive exam.” Turning in his seat to face Laurel, he said,
“Since you have not had a pap smear in three years, we will need to
perform a two part exam. After today, I will need to see you again
in a few days.”
She was floored, she didn’t even want
to be here now and yet he was requesting she return for more? “I
don’t understand. I’ve never heard of an exam this
extensive.”
His expression turned hard. “I will
explain after we finish here today. Now please lie back on the
table so I may perform the breast exam.”
Laurel lay back on the table and Dr.
Stewart quickly untied the strings in the front of her gown.
Tossing back both sides of the gown so she lay completely exposed,
he lifted her left arm and began using two hands to check for lumps
starting under her armpit and ending at her nipple. He repeated the
action on her right side. When he was finished, he had her put her
arms down to rest on her sides.
She thought he was finished, but he
