painful. He lowered his head to Caleb’s neck. As much as he wanted to take the time and tease his scar, he was too ravenous to do so. Opening his mouth wide, he bit down hard and drew a great swallow right as they climaxed together. Caleb’s blood tasted sweeter and hotter than McBride remembered. He couldn’t imagine feeding from anyone but him no matter how thirsty he was. As McBride drank deeply of Caleb’s blood, he swore that no matter what he had to do, he would claim Caleb as his own.

Chapter 11

Karsten’s scream startled Devon back. He almost slipped, but he grasped the handle on the wall of the tub area. He’d always wondered what that metal bar was for, but now he was eternally grateful it was there, or he would have fallen and taken Karsten with him. Karsten’s cry had shocked him out of his bliss and truncated his release. He’d been right in the middle of spilling between Karsten tight little thighs when he’d screamed.
    “Karsten, what’s wrong?”
His bright blue eyes were so big they dominated his face. His mouth opened and closed, but he was unable to say anything. When he reached up and grasped his neck, Devon understood in a sickening rush.
“I’m sorry. Oh, Karsten. I’m so sorry. I don’t know what came over me.” But that wasn’t quite true. Lust had pushed aside his concern. In that moment of release, he’d been blind to everything but his own needs. He’d wanted to feed when he orgasmed. It was that simple. And that one mindless reaction had destroyed the trust he’d built with Karsten.
When he reached for Karsten, he stepped backward and started to slide. Devon grabbed him, which made him utter another shocked cry, but if Devon let go, Karsten was going to be hurt far worse by smacking into the porcelain.
“Stop. I don’t want you to get— hurt .” Devon lost his grip on Karsten and on the very slippery floor of the tub. He was unable to grasp the bar since he was trying to regain his hold on Karsten. They went down together. The only thing Devon was able to do was go down under Karsten so rather than hitting the tub, he landed on him. Thankfully, Karsten was light, and the smack into Devon’s hip hurt but not as bad as Karsten would have gotten hurt otherwise. Water and rubber ducks went flying out of the tub, making a mess on the floor. It took a moment to right himself and Karsten, but once he did, he looked around at the carnage.
“I’m so sorry.” Karsten was looking at the bathroom floor.
“I don’t care about that.” Devon reached for Karsten’s hand, relieved when he didn’t flinch away or cry out. “Are you okay?”
“I was so scared when I felt you at my neck.” He didn’t reach up to touch himself, but it was clear he wanted to. “I know you wouldn’t hurt me, but I suddenly thought of those men. I overreacted.”
“You panicked. It’s okay.” Devon was shaking from a combination of adrenaline and chilled skin from the loss of warmth from the water.
    “I ruined your bathroom.”
    “It’s only water.”
“And ducks.” Karsten looked up at him.
The absurdity of the situation made Devon laugh. After a moment of surprise, Karsten laughed with him.
“Stay right here.” Devon turned the water on and set the temperature. He held back two towels so they could dry off, but the rest of the stack he tossed onto the floor. He used them to mop up the mess. Whenever he hit a ducky, he tossed it into the tub with Karsten. Once the towels were sopping wet, he took them into the kitchen, dumping them into the sink. He wrung them out and then went back into the bathroom to blot up more water.
    “I should help.”
“You should stay right where I put you.” Devon tried to look harsh, but Karsten seemed to know he wasn’t serious. But he did stay in the tub. “You need to tend to the ducks. I’m sure that scared them.”
Karsten giggled. “How is it that you’re not angry?”
    “Because it wasn’t your fault.”
    “It
