group, and possibly a covert religious agenda. I formed our team to probe that agenda and keep an eye on them. Hence the Watchers.â
âWe got the name from
Buffy
,â Cooper said.
âThey pray and read the Bible ⦠Thatâs the big secret?â Danny said, unimpressed.
âWell, no, thereâs also the covert religious agenda,â Tom said.
âSince weâre rushing, can I bring up the cat story?â Tony queried.
âIn a minute, yes,â Tom said. âBut Coop, you had some information about Hector Watson?â
âYeah, apparently heâs trying to get a date with Jessica Pereillo,â Cooper said.
âI thought it was pertinent information,â Tom replied, irritated.
âWho told you he asked her out?â Tony wondered.
âI heard it from Billy Reynolds. Hector was all braggy about it,â Cooper said.
âHector doesnât brag. Heâs actually an OK guy, if you want to know,â Tony said.
âYouâre friends with that skeevy Hector dude?â Danny asked.
âHeâs not skeevy, heâs OK,â Tony said.
âHeâs the man behind the man,â Tom said. âBut even so, weâll move on to the security breach. Olivia?â
Olivia cleared her throat and took a piece of paper from her pocket. âTheyâre pretty clueless. They donât have the technology to make a radio descrambler, and they donât know how to do a wireless paging system run on a remote server,â Olivia said with satisfaction.
âAnd thatâs what youâd need, is it?â Cooper asked quietly.
âOr two cans and a very, very long piece of string,â Danny added.
Olivia chuckled with an adorable little laugh.
âTommy, do you have any cups up there?â a voice yelled from downstairs.
âDammit, I thought she was at Safeway,â Tom said.
âThis is some meeting,â Cooper said sourly.
âWeâll do it at your house, then. Iâm sure that will be perfect,â Tom said.
âYou know we canât with Aunt Lisa always around,â Cooper muttered.
âTommy, do you have any cups?â Tomâs mother yelled again.
âNo peace at all in here, and we have to come all the way from Cobalt,â Cooper said.
âDo something about it, then,â Tom snapped.
âWhy donât we meet at Starbucks, like I suggested?â Cooper said.
âZero security at Starbucks. Zero.â
âTom! Cups!â
âIâll take the cups down,â Tony said, getting up and grabbing the assorted cups, mugs, and glasses.
âIâll help you,â Olivia said.
When they had gone, the mood was even more strained.
Finally Cooper cleared his throat and asked Danny, âListen, er, a couple of us have been wondering if you and Tony are going out?â
âWhat? Are you kidding? I only just met her.â
âAh, good, good, because I was going to, I was thinking of, well â¦â
âTake it from me, you got no chance with that high-maintenance rich girl,â Tom said.
Youâre one to talk, Danny thought, but said, âSheâs not that rich. Her dad works at NORAD.â
âEverybody that lives in that part of Cobalt is rich,â Tom said.
I live in that part of Cobalt, Danny thought. The boyssat in silence for a minute before Danny said, âOlivia seems nice.â
Tom nodded.
Finally Cooper said, âSo last night I was on Gears and I was just drifting, chatting, killing people, getting experienceââ
Tom began coughing and gasping for air.
âWhatâs happening to you?â Cooper asked with no concern whatsoever.
âIâm feigning an asthma attack,â Tom said.
âWhy?â
âSo you wonât tell me any more of your Gears of War story.â
Before either of them got really ticked off, the girls came back.
âTom needs mouth-to-mouth resuscitation,â Cooper said to
