workday on Wednesday and she was getting ready to leave the office. She clicked into her e-mail one last time, hoping for some sort of message from him, even just a confirmation that they were still on for tonight.
There was nothing new in her in-box.
    Damn it.
She blew out a breath and closed her e-mail, shut her computer down.
Why was she acting like some starstruck teenager? She’d never been the kind of woman to wait by the phone—or the computer—for a man. Even with Jake. One of the reasons why he’d been so drawn to her, he’d told her early in their relationship, was her independence. He’d liked that he’d had to pursue her, that she didn’t always have time for him.
Maybe she was making things too easy for Dante. Maybe she should pull back a bit. Tell him she was busy tonight and couldn’t make it after all.
She knew damn well she wasn’t about to do that. She couldn’t wait to see him. She was practically trembling all over with need. The need to see him. For him to touch her. Simply to be with him again.
    Ridiculous .
    But she couldn’t stop herself.
With a sigh she pulled on her trench coat, picked up her purse and walked into the hallway. She couldn’t help but peek at Dante’s closed office door on her way to the elevator.
So he was still working. Good to know.
Her cell phone went off and she answered it without looking at the caller ID. Her gaze was still glued to his door at the end of the long hall.
    “Hello?”
“Kara. Did I catch you before you left the building?”
Dante. Her stomach melted, her legs turning to liquid. The same need that was instantly warming between her thighs.
“Hi. Yes, I’m still here,” she told him. “I was just leaving.”
    “Don’t.”
“Um . . . okay. Are you working late?”
“Staying late, maybe. Is anyone else still here?”
    “Yes, a few people.”
    “Ruby?” he asked.
“No, she left about an hour ago. Why?”
“Because I want you to come to my office.”
    “Now?”
    “Yes, Kara. Now.”
There was no arguing with that tone. She didn’t want to. And she understood he wasn’t planning to go over case files with her. She swallowed.
    “Okay. I’ll be right there.”
She glanced around the office. Gary’s door was open and she could see him in there, talking with his law clerk.
She took in a breath and moved back down the hall toward Dante’s office. And nearly bumped into Theresa, who was coming out of her own office, pulling on her coat.
    “Kara, you’re working late?”
“Oh no. Well, maybe. I just . . . need to check something.”
“Want me to hold the elevator for you?”
“What? No. No, thanks. I don’t want to keep you waiting. It may take me a few minutes.”
“Okay. See you in the morning.”
    “Good night.”
She walked into her office, counted to thirty, peeked out to make sure Theresa had gone. She felt like a kid sneaking around after school, which was oddly exciting. But the excitement had everything to do with Dante.
    Dante .
Another small rush of need washed over her as she moved across the hall to his door, opened it and slipped through, shutting the door quietly behind her.
He was sitting behind his desk, handsome as hell in his black suit, his dark blue shirt striking against the golden brown of his eyes. A slow smile lit his face, and he nodded at her.
    “Take your coat off, Kara.”
No greeting. Just that simple command.
    She loved it.
She slid her coat from her shoulders and laid it down on the brown leather sofa against one wall, set her purse next to it.
    “Come here,” he said quietly.
He watched her as she crossed the room. She could feel her body heating up beneath his penetrating gaze. She licked her lips, approached his desk.
“You look great in these tight skirts you wear,” he told her, his tone all smoke and heat. “That sexy, businesswoman look. It suits you.” He stood, moved in closer, making her breath catch. “And it makes your ass look superb. But I want a better
