didnât say anything. She was watching him, her paintbrush dripping noiselessly onto the cloth.
âYou two are out of your minds,â Kit said. âWhat about your dad? What about our spring break?â
âIâm not going,â Jamie said.
âJamieââ Kit shook his head, looking from Jamie to Beth. âWhat theâ?â He turned to me.
âMe neither,â I said quietly.
Kit started to say something, then changed his mind. He sank heavily into the couch, exhaling loudly.
âThis is nuts,â he said, looking at the three of us. âI hope you know what youâre doing.â
Nobody answered him. There was nothing to say.

Later that afternoon, I lay across the bed in the blue bedroom, pressing the phone close to my mouth and talking to Ginny. There was too much to tell her, and this time saying it aloud made it seem more absurd, like I was making it up. I started with the girl.
âWow,â Ginny said. âBut thatâs great. I mean, I thought Jamie was going to jail, for sure. I thought weâd be visiting him in, like, a New Mexico prison. Can you imagine? And now itâs just nothing.â
âItâs not nothing,â I said. âSheâs still dead.â
âI know, I know,â Ginny said hurriedly. âAnd itâs so bizarre. Whoever heard of dying when youâre twenty? That is freaky. I didnât mean itâs nothing-nothing. I just mean you can go to your dadâs now. You know?â
âWe canât,â I said. âNot yet.â
âWhy not?â
I considered all the possible answers to that question, and finally blurted out, âJamie slept with Beth.â
I could hear her rustling with interest. âWhat?â
âJamie. He slept with Beth.â
âWhoâs that?â
âThe lady who lives here, at the house where weâre staying. I told you about her. The artist.â
âBut I thought you saidââ
âYeah, sheâs old. As old asâ¦â I didnât want to say my mom.
Ginny blew out a long, impressed breath. âWow. He slept with her? Are you sure? Maybe they just made out.â
I sighed. âNo, I donât think so.â I told her what had happened in the hallway.
âWow,â she said again.
âAnd Kit kissed me.â I added this quickly, going for broke. I might as well tell her everything.
â What? â She shrieked into the phone, and I could hear the springs of her mattress squeak as she bounced on the bed.
âI know.â
âKit the zit? Youâre kidding.â
âNo, Iâm not. And you canât call him that anymore.â
âLucy! No way!â
I sighed. âItâs true.â
âHoly shit. What is going on down there? I think you guys need to come back to Kansas pronto. â
âWe do,â I said fervently. âWe really do. But we canât yet.â
âWait, stop. Tell me about kissing Kit. What was it like? How did that even happen? â
âI donât know. It was justââ I felt shy about it suddenly. âIt was nice,â I said finally.
âBetter than Scott Lampere?â
âWell, of course. Duh.â
âOkay, okay. But still. I just canât see it. Kitâs always so mean. He can be horrible. And he never even looks at us. I thought he couldnât stand us.â
âMe too,â I said.
Ginny waited a minute. When I didnât say anything, she sighed. âWell, I guess he changed his mind. Which is good.â I could hear her reevaluating. Kit was being reborn in her mind. âI mean, he is cute. You have to admit.â
âUh-huh.â
âHeâs really cute, actually.â
âI know.â
âWith that hair. His girlfriends are always pretty.â
âYeah.â
âSo do you think you and Kitâ?â
âNo. No, itâs not like that.
