Cheyenneâs behavior wouldnât prompt anyone to confront them. She looked down the lane and saw a face peer out of Birchâs window. Oh no, had he spotted them running past his place?
After they clambered into the truck, Casey said, âI wonder if the girlâs just a hot date or his girlfriend.â
âDoes it matter?â
âIt could. What if Birch had an accomplice shoot Jasmine? Someone whoâd do anything for him.â
âYou really think that Noel is innocent?â
Casey stroked Cheyenneâs head. âHe seems sincere, and the evidence against him is a tad too convenient.â
âAside from sincere, what else does he seem?â
Casey hesitated. Why was he asking? âQuiet, polite, intelligent. The complete opposite of Marie.â Louâs downcast expression surprised her. Was he a bit jealous, or did he think she was being naïve?
âMarie once told me he lost the use of his legs in a motorcycle crash,â Lou said. âIt seems he had a passion for Harleys and speed.â
More candid conversations with Marie. How many other personal things had she shared with him? âDid she ever mention if Noel can get around with crutches or other support?â
âNo.â Lou headed east toward Vancouver.
âMarie will go ballistic when I tell her that two strangers gave Birch a solid alibi.â
âYouâve dealt with her emotions before.â
âThat doesnât mean Iâm looking forward to it.â
â¢Â  â¢Â  â¢
âNO FRIGGINâ WAY!â Marie shouted over the phone. âBirch canât be innocent!â
While Marie railed, Lou put his arm around Casey. Heâd told her he wanted to hear Marieâs response to tonightâs events. Casey had a hunch he also wanted to make sure she didnât become further involved.
âAre you sure you didnât recognize the woman with Birch?â Marie asked.
âYes.â
Marie sighed loudly into the receiver. âIâll call Child Protection Services and tell them about the woman. Maybe sheâs involved in Jasmineâs death. Meanwhile, could you check out the half sisterâs alibi?â
âI donât thinkââ
âSince Gabrielle OâReilly was in Coquitlam two days before the murder, and she and Jasmine argued, her activities should be investigated. God knows I canât count on the police to do it,â Marie said. âMaybe Gabrielle brought the pistol from home and stalked Jasmine until she saw her chance. That would explain how she learned about Noel and his van.â
âI canât do this anymore, Marie, Iâm sorry.â
âBut youâve put my brother in deeper shit than he was before, so canât you please help him out a little more?â
Casey did feel guilty about that. âWhat if Gabrielle has an alibi and I make things worse?â
Lou wandered toward the guinea pig cages.
The line was silent a few seconds. âIt makes me sick to say this, but then weâd have to look at coworkersâ alibis.â
âNo way, Robertoâs a friend.â
Lou turned to her.
âDavid Eisler isnât anyoneâs friend,â Marie said.
âDo you have a reason for suspecting Eisler?â She watched Louâs eyes widen.
âAfter I had lunch with Jan today, yeah.â
Casey had shared a few coffee breaks with Eislerâs administrative assistant. She knew that Jan loathed her boss.
âThe day Jasmine died,â Marie said, âEisler didnât come to work until noon, and Jan didnât know where heâd been. Apparently, heâs been disappearing a lot lately.â
âThat doesnât make him a killer.â
âIt doesnât rule him out either. When he showed up at your place, something was obviously bothering his conscience.â
âThen tell your brotherâs lawyer about it.â
