“Good! Maybe she’ll quit trying to steal my Ivy and our daughter!”
I chuckled, “Don’t count on it. It will be at least a year before we’d have one old enough to be kidnapped. I do have a question that you’re the only one that I’d ask. I know you’ve seen the magic that swirls around Father when he’s… feeling friendly. That same magic kicks on with me, too, and I don’t know the trick to controlling it. Have you had any experience with it?”
“I know exactly what you’re talking about and I use it on special occasions or when I just feel lazy and want the magic to do all the work. But if you’re not able to control it, turning on and can’t turn it off, I can see how that would be a problem.” He put his hand on my wrist and we snapped into our mind-to-mind communication.               He showed me the magic that we’d been discussing, ‘I believe this is what you’re talking about. This is the method I use to turn it on and off. It amuses me how much time we siblings waste talking like normal people, when we can take care of two hours of conversation with a handshake!’
I smiled, ‘My mother would be out of a job if she could teach her new students the way that we teach each other.’
We separated with James nodding, “I think I’m going down to see how things are progressing.” He left, walking toward the ships that were under construction.
I walked up to the table where the girls had a line of workmen coming through for breakfast. The men were quite happy to be served by so many attractive young ladies and I was happy with the change I saw after only one night. Aunt Chloe had removed all physical scars and injuries and the quickly-grabbed clothing was a huge improvement over the rags they’d been dressed in. I knew when Lia showed up that they would all look even better. She couldn’t get measurements last night, of course, but she is a woman and would have a good eye for that sort of thing.
Zayna was very happy to see me and waved from across the table. It was an odd feeling to know that I’d slept with the young lady and this was the first time I’d seen her in the daylight. Happily, she was a very attractive and friendly girl. Hoping I would understand, she pointed out three more girls who were standing with her. I guessed that they were the other three that my wife had taken as consorts as I was drifting off last night. I was happy and knew I could have done worse in the daylight. With all the rescued girls being kept for the consort trade, it wasn’t surprising that they were all extraordinarily pretty.
I went back into the castle to see how the book work was going. The moment I stuck my head in the vault, I knew it wasn’t going well.
“I told you that it looked like a mess.” I said sadly.
Ewayn shook her head. “The man has receipts and invoices mixed together in here that should be filed. He has different amounts of money set on papers that you would think equaled amounts to be paid. It seems like he just grabbed coins and used them as paperweights to make someone think he was doing something.”
I chuckled, “I met the man and that might not be too far off from what he was doing. He acted as though the job meant nothing to him and he left as soon as my wife and I showed up. He lives in town and is seen wandering around sometimes.”
“Well, Lambin and I are making some headway. There may be enough money in here to actually pay everything outstanding but we have to get it organized first. Is there anything in the other vault that we’ll need to go through?”
“All that is in there is the money that my father gave my wife and
