Alexei turned to see her standing there looking positively delicious in his shirt from the night before and nothing else.
“Here I am,” he agreed. “Did you think I’d left?”
There was a look in her eyes that said that yes, that was exactly what she’d thought. He wondered if that was something that happened to her often or if she’d just been expecting it of him in particular. She wouldn’t be wrong, exactly. Mornings after were hardly one his favorite things, but they’d already had a couple of them between them, and he wouldn’t have left without saying something to her first.
“Well, you left all your clothes on my floor, so unless you were planning to drive back to your place naked, I knew you had to be around somewhere.”
Her voice was more confident than her face, and Alexei forgot all about the phone call for a second and moved in closer to her, a smile spreading across his lips.
“I wouldn’t have gone anywhere without saying goodbye first,” he promised, using his fingers to tip her chin up, making her look at him. As if sealing his words, he kissed her firmly, like he seemed to be almost addicted to doing these days.
There was just something about the sweetness of her mouth and the way she arched up against him, warm palms against the skin of his chest as she returned the kiss eagerly. He was getting used to this, which probably wasn’t good since he didn’t even know what they were doing. He wasn’t looking for a girlfriend, but he didn’t want to think about that. Not when she was pressed against him and wearing his clothes and looking like something he wanted to keep.
“You know,” he murmured against her mouth, tongue dragging along her bottom lip. “It’s not nice to take other people’s clothes.”
“You left them on my floor,” Emma reiterated, and he was pleased to hear how breathless she sounded already. “I think that made them fair game.”
He smirked and nipped at her mouth. “I’m not sure that’s how this works. You’re lucky you look so good in the shirt. Otherwise I might be forced to...repossess it.”
Emma laughed softly, scraping blunt fingernails down his chest and eliciting a shiver from him. “That is lucky. Although...if you’d rather me take it off that can be arranged, too.” There was heat in her voice, and god, Alexei wanted to follow through with it. He wanted to take her right there against the wall with her in his shirt and leave her a mess under it, but the phone call and the implications of it niggled at the back of his mind, and he sighed instead, stepping back.
Her face fell a bit, and he hurried to explain. “Believe me, I am so, so into that idea, but I have to go.”
“Oh,” Emma said. “Right.”
“Someone broke into my apartment this morning. I was just on the phone with my building manager. I have to go over there and look at the security footage with them.”
That seemed to be enough to get her to believe that this wasn’t about him running from her, and her eyes widened. “Oh my god. Did they take anything?”
Alexei shook his head. “They don’t think so, but I have to go check that, too.”
“Jesus,” she breathed. “I hope it all works out okay.”
“Me, too,” Alexei replied. When she went to take the shirt off, he smirked and shook his head. “Keep it. I’ll just have to come back and get it from you later.”
She smiled at him, and Alexei allowed himself the luxury of leaning in for one last kiss that was all too brief.
An hour and a half later, he was sitting in the building manager’s office, completely dumbfounded. The security footage hadn’t shown much, just a man and a woman entering the elevator to go up to his floor and then using something to force their way in. They were inside his apartment for less than ten minutes before they were leaving again, right out the front door.
It was hard to get a clear view of their faces, but Alexei was pretty sure he’d never seen either of them
