remember,” I reply. “He made a move on me. I was tipsy.”
“Did you find him attractive at all?”
“No, not at all,” I reply.
“I was keeping a watchful eye on you, though you may not have noticed,” Julian explains. “You appeared to be flirting with Daniel.”
“Well, maybe I liked that he paid attention to me,” I blurt out.
“You want to know why his wife left him?” Julian sneers.
I take a few sips of water. I’m starting to feel less tipsy; the hangover pill is working its magic.
    “He’s an alcoholic, Cheryl.”
“I saw that blonde woman smiling at you,” I bark.
He frowns as a trace of irritation flashes across his face. “I have no intention of fucking any girl except you. I told you I want you forever. I’ve made that very clear from the beginning.”
We are silent for a while, both overcome with jealousy. Several minutes later, Mark and Phillip approach us. Julian wraps one arm around my shoulder and pins me protectively to his side.
    “Everything alright?” Mark asks.
“Daniel is out of the deal,” Julian responds.
“He asked for it,” Phillip sneers and chuckles.
“Daniel has had too much to drink tonight,” Mark explains.
“I never trust that guy around my wife,” Phillip says. “He will take any opportunity he can get.”
I listen as the men discuss the business acquisition—their future plans now that Daniel is no longer a part of it.
We excuse ourselves and Julian intertwines his hands with mine as we make our way through the crowd. We are stopped repeatedly by people who want to converse with us. I realize that we really are a celebrity couple, at least within Julian’s inner circle of friends and acquaintances.
The valet arrives with our orange McLaren P1. Julian opens the passenger’s-side door and I slide into the low sports car as gracefully as I can in my tight pencil dress. Julian slides into the driver’s seat. He gently raises my hand to his lips, kisses the back of my hand, and gazes at me affectionately.
He starts the engine, which powerfully roars to life. I glance at the two doormen at the front of the nightclub who are eying us. The engine growls loudly as we speed away.
“Did you ever fuck Milana?” I ask as I gaze at Julian’s handsome profile. His sculpted lips part as he throws a sideway glance at me.
“Of course not,” he says definitely.
“I mean ever , like even before you married me?” I ask firmly.
“No, I never fucked her. I maintain a strictly professional relationship with all who work for me,” he responds as he makes a left turn onto another street, nearing our home.
“I don’t feel comfortable having her work for you.”
“Marriage is based on trust.” Julian glances at me, then back at the road. “There are beautiful women everywhere, but you are the most beautiful of them all. I wouldn’t dare cheat on you.”

    CHAPTER TWELVE

In the morning, after Julian and I have breakfast together, Julian goes into his office to do some work. I sit at the kitchen island, sorting through Julian’s mail and sipping a latté. I stack the company mail into one pile. It appears that there is more company mail than usual.
I come across a letter addressed to me. I rip open the envelope and read the single sentence.

    He’s hiding something from you.

I glare at the sentence and debate whether or not I should show Julian the letter. Who the fuck is sending these things? One part of me desperately wants to show Julian the letter, but the other part decides not to confront him.
I grab my cell phone and call the private investigator.
“I was just about to call you,” Charlie answers. “I have something to show you.”
My heart speeds up. “What did you find?”
“I can’t tell you over the phone; you need to come into my office.”
    “Okay, I’ll be there shortly.”
I head upstairs to place the company mail on Julian’s desk. I go back to the kitchen island to finish my latté.
