headsânot because theyâre skeptics. A lot of them are notânot anymore. They shake their heads because they canât believe theyâre even thinking seriously that this might be the necessary solution.â
âKnowing politiciansâpresent company excluded,â said Sandro, âit probably frightens them to think about going out on a limb and telling their constituents they think drugs should be made legal.â
The Senator laughed softly. âWhen push comes to shove, the thing they keep coming back to is, what are you going to do about all the people who come from out of state? Youâll flood the state with junkies, like Amsterdam. Thatâs what we have to work out, Sandro.â
âIt should be introduced in Washington, nationally. Then we wouldnât have that problem.â
âWeâre just showing Washington the way,â said the Senator. âBut you have to make the bill foolproof, work out the residency requirements, constitutionality, all that; otherwise itâll be sucked down ass-backward. We donât want to provide the morality lobbyists a hook to pull us down with.â
âAre there a lot of people lobbying against it?â said Sandro.
âYou bet. Most of them represent law enforcement, D.A.âs, Police, Corrections.â
âCorrections?â
âThey say theyâll have a problem with the thousands of people who are in for crimes that arenât going to be crimes any more. They never bother to mention the real reason that theyâre concerned: the huge loss of funds currently being poured into correction facilities. They get twisted when I say, okay, weâll pardon the people in jail for crimes that are no longer crimes.â The Senator laughed. âThey come back and say, then youâll be putting thousands of convicts on the streets.â
âSounds like youâre having a lot of fun,â said Sandro.
âAt least we have the vagasites moving. But, nothingâs going to happen if you donât finish the bill. Your secretary said youâre going to be out of town for the weekend, racing?â
âWhatâs the matter with her, telling people where Iâve gone for the weekend.â
âDonât be putting me in the position of getting your secretary in trouble because she told me where you were. I told her how important it was, that I needed my bill. She told me because she knows weâre close.â
âWe are?â
âJust tell me when I can get my hands on the bill.â
âIâm on my way back in,â said Sandro. He glanced over at Tatiana. She smiled.
âBack to New York? What happened to your racing weekend?â
âMerian Ellis happened. She sent a Marshal after me.â
âFederal Court Merian Ellis?â
âI hope there arenât two of them.â
âWhat did you do now?â
âApparently something happened to Red Hardieâs lawyer,â said Sandro, âand Ellis plans to stick me back into the trial.â
âDo you have to accept the case?â
âShe can do anything she likes,â said Sandro, âincluding putting me in jail for contempt if I refuse. But Iâm going to appeal to her sense of decency and fairness.â
âWhen you tell me that, I know youâre in real trouble, pal,â said the Senator. âI may try and sell her on the de-criminalization bill, that these people shouldnât be tried for a crime.â
âFat chance on that one,â the Senator said. âWhen will you be in? You want to get together later tonight?â
The tall towers of the George Washington Bridge, with its network of cables, appeared out of the early evening sky. âMaybe weâll do something like that,â said Sandro. âIâm just getting to the G.W.B. We were supposed to go out to celebrate Tatianaâs birthday.â
âAnd your anniversary,â said
