though it were some textbook exampleof how to move steadily through adulthood. âOf course I am,â she said, somewhat defensively, âitâs just ⦠oh, god, itâs just I canât believe Iâm telling you before Iâve even told the father.â
Mikaelaâs grip tightened on her arm and she leaned forward. âWhy? Whoâs the father?â
âWhat? Mikaela! Itâs Alex, of course.â
âOh.â Mikaela looked a bit disappointed. âOkay, why havenât you told Alex?â
âItâs ⦠complicated.â Chloe began to fill Mikaela in on the scene in the restaurant the week before, Julia there looking gorgeous, and Alexâs strange behaviour since.
When she paused, Mikaela sat back looking thoughtful. âHmmm. Well, itâs always the quiet ones.â
Chloe was rapidly wishing sheâd never started this. Mikaela was anything but reassuring. â Whatâs always the quiet ones?â She sighed. âHe isnât having an affair, Mik. Itâs just made me feel a bit weird, thatâs all, and I wanted it to be ⦠happy, when I told him about the baby, not strained. Besides, Alex isnât quiet.â
âWhat? Of course he is, Chloe. Heâs not silent-quiet, but you couldnât get much more reserved and brooding â in that mysterious, sexy way heâs got. Like, like ⦠Mr Darcy!â
Chloe was stunned. Sheâd never seen Alex as approaching anything Mr-Darcyish by nature. He wasnât a chatterbox, but â¦
How many people thought like this? She felt giddy, and put down her wineglass. How many people had an entirely different perspective of her own husband? And â most importantly â who the hell was right?
âWhat do you think I should do?â she asked.
âYouâre asking me ⦠!â Mikaela began. âHavenât you noticed I never get past the third date?â
âWell, perhaps you should wait longer before putting out,â Chloe retorted, before biting her lip, but Mikaela just laughed. Then, seeing her cousin sitting there looking crestfallen, Mikaela rubbed her finger against her chin while she thought.
Finally, she leaned in and said, âDonât take it from him, hon. Demand to know whatâs going on. And, for godâs sake, tell him youâre pregnant. Then heâll have to treat you right â nothing like a bun in the oven to be able to add in some emotional blackmail.â
âI donât want to have to âblackmailâ him to get him to do the right thing, Mik,â Chloe snapped, then added, âbut youâre right, we need to have it out.â She sighed. âI just want things to get back to normal.â
âI know you do, babe.â
Chloe had had enough of this discussion; it was making everything seem worse. Her mind searched for a new topic to cause a diversion, and came up trumps. âHave you spoken to your mum yet?â Mikaela and her family had been on difficult terms since Mikaela had discussed some of the wilder aspects of her sex life on a late-night television show.
âNope.â Mikaela knocked back the last of her wine. âWaiting for her now.â
âMik, she doesnât even know where you are.â
âI know, I know. But Iâll leave it a while longer, I think.â
âMik ââ
Mikaela held up her hand. The devilish glint in her eyeswas extinguished for a moment, and Chloe realised that her cousin looked tired.
âThings canât always go back, Chlo. However much you want them to. You have to work with where you are right now, and go forward. Wishing things could be what they once were just sends you dotty, believe you me.â
âDo you wish you hadnât done it?â They both knew Chloe was referring to Mikaelaâs five minutes of television fame.
âOf course not!â Mikaela lifted the carafe and poured herself some
