like this. Do you cook at all?”
“No. I hate it. I guess it stems from getting my food from a package for most of my life. And if you tell me you cook, I might be willing to let you live here. At least for the next few days.” She paced the kitchen, and he tried his best to stay out of her way. “Back to this report. Does anyone besides the two of us know that your brother did this? I mean, it could end badly for him if word got out.”
“No. I asked him to have a look at the stuff I was able to gather up before anyone came here. He did it at his lab in his offices.” He wondered aloud if he should put someone on his brother to watch over him.
“Already done. And only people I can trust too. You should also know that these drugs, they won’t show up on any report as being bought either. More than likely they were stolen and never reported missing. Whoever did this, they more than likely killed the chemist after he did it for them.”
“No witnesses.” She nodded as she paced the kitchen. Her body moved like she’d invented movement. Slim and muscled, he could see that she was comfortable with herself. But he also knew that if she needed to, and he’d seen it first hand, she could be as lethal as his cat when pissed off with just that same sexy body. And her clothing fit her like it had been painted on her.
He’d noticed her clothing when he’d been looking for something to pull on earlier. Not that he thought any of her things would fit him. She was smaller by a great deal, but he’d noticed that her closet was mostly empty except for a large gun safe, and there wasn’t a single dress in the big area. Mostly there were T-shirts, black, as well as a few pair of cargo pants, also black. He’d gone snooping to see what else she might have hidden. There wasn’t a great deal of either personal items or dressy clothing. All he’d been able to find was more guns than he’d thought were in all of the state.
“What are you cooking?” He told her cookies and steak. “You have to tell me how you came up with that combo. Potatoes and steak, yeah, I get that, but not cookies. And I didn’t think you could eat chocolate.”
“Canines can’t eat chocolate. Cats can, I guess. At least we can. This is my mom’s recipe.” He handed her a hot cookie as soon as he pulled the pan from the oven. “So, are we not going to talk about you being my mate?”
“Not yet. I have to not think about things for a minute to clear out the cobwebs. Tell me why you had your brother run a test on me being sick. I’m assuming that’s where he got his information.” Colin told her that it had been Boyd’s idea, not his. “So he’s the smarter one of the two of you? Perhaps he needs a mate too.”
He growled low and told her that it didn’t work that way. But she was off on another line of questions before he could explain it to her. If he even had to.
“I’m not going to be going back into active duty, or so they’re telling me. I can have a desk job and recruit some shit heads, but they won’t let me go back to what I was doing. Did you know that?” He told her that he did, Tony had told him. “I’m not sure what to do with myself right now. I don’t know how to do anything but give orders and expect people to obey them. But I have some metal in my body that’s keeping me from what I need to do. Or so they told me.”
“I’m guessing from that you don’t believe that part either. May I make a suggestion?” She said sure but not to expect miracles from it. “I was thinking that the person that didn’t tell you what was really in those drugs might have been the same one that told you you’re not fit for active duty. My brother Boyd can run some tests and see…. Where are you going?”
“I have a phone around here somewhere. I was going to call him and see when I can come in.” He pulled the last of the cookies out of the oven and went to find her. She was in her office on the phone, and he sat down
