part of me always wonder what it would have been like if I had just said yes? Probably. But I could live with it.
He was staring at me, the laughter dying from his eyes like the last bit of light seeping from the sky. âWhat are you thinking, ma petite ?â
âCanât you read my mind?â I asked.
âYou know I cannot.â
âI donât know anything about you, Jean-Claude, not a bloody thing.â
âYou know more about me than anyone else in the city.â
âYasmeen included?â
He lowered his eyes, almost embarrassed. âWe are very old friends.â
âHow old?â
He met my eyes, but his face was empty, blank. âOld enough.â
âThatâs not an answer,â I said.
âNo,â he said, âit is an evasion.â
So he wasnât going to answer my question; what else was new? âAre there any other master vampires in town besides you, Malcolm, and Yasmeen?â
He shook his head. âNot to my knowledge.â
I frowned. âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
âExactly what I said.â
âYouâre the Master of the City. Arenât you supposed to know?â
âThings are a little unsettled, ma petite .â
âExplain that.â
He shrugged, and even in the bloodstained shirt it looked graceful.âNormally, as Master of the City, all other lesser master vampires would need my permission to stay in the city, butââhe shrugged againââthere are those who think I am not strong enough to hold the city.â
âYouâve been challenged?â
âLet us just say I am expecting to be challenged.â
âWhy?â I asked.
âThe other masters were afraid of Nikolaos,â he said.
âAnd theyâre not afraid of you.â It wasnât a question.
âUnfortunately, no.â
âWhy not?â
âThey are not as easily impressed as you are, ma petite .â
I started to say I wasnât impressed, but it wasnât true. Jean-Claude could smell it when I lied, so why bother?
âSo there could be another master in the city without your knowledge.â
âYes.â
âWouldnât you sort of sense each other?â
âPerhaps, perhaps not.â
âThanks for clearing that up.â
He rubbed fingertips across his forehead as if he had a headache. Did vampires get headaches? âI cannot tell you what I do not know.â
âWould the . . .â I groped for a word, and couldnât find oneââmore mundane vampires be able to kill someone without your permission?â
âMundane?â
âJust answer the damn question.â
âYes, they could.â
âWould five vampires hunt in a pack without a master vampire to referee?â
He nodded. âVery nice choice of word, ma petite , and the answer is no. We are solitary hunters, given a choice.â
I nodded. âSo either you, Malcolm, Yasmeen, or some mysterious master is behind it.â
âNot Yasmeen. She is not strong enough.â
âOkay, then you, Malcolm, or a mysterious master.â
âDo you really think I have gone rogue?â He was smiling at me, but his eyes held something more serious. Did it matter to him what I thought of him? I hoped not.
âI donât know.â
âYou would confront me, thinking I might be insane? How indiscreet of you.â
âIf you donât like the answer, you shouldnât have asked the question,â I said.
âVery true.â
The office door opened. Dolph came out, notebook in hand. âYou can go home, Anita. Iâll check the statements with you tomorrow.â
I nodded. âThanks.â
âHeh, I know where you live.â He smiled.
I smiled back. âThanks, Dolph.â I stood up.
Jean-Claude stood in one smooth motion like he was a puppet pulled up by invisible strings. Richard stood slower, using the wall to
