We’re both adults, and we both wanted it.”
“But I’m Jack’s instructor. I don’t think people would understand.”
“What people, and why would you think I give a damn about it? I don’t live by citizens’ rules. Now, come over here and give me your sweet mouth again.”
“No. I do care. I can’t risk getting fired over this.”
“No one’s gonna fire you ’cause we’re kissing. Lighten up, babe.” He reached out and grabbed her hand, tugging her toward him.
Addie broke free of his grasp. “I think we’re done. I lost my head. We don’t really know each other. I mean, I don’t even know where you were born or how many siblings you have, or anything. We haven’t even gone out.”
Looking at her earnest face, Chas laughed. “I’m from here, one sister, two parents, who you’ve already met, and I have a major hard-on after kissing you.”
“What?” Shock registered on her face.
“Do I shock you, baby? Look, if you want to play respectable and go out for chow before we fuck, I can do that. What’re you doing on Monday night?” Taking her by surprise, he yanked her back against him. “You feel that, honey? Yeah, that’s right, you did that to me. I’m not gonna lie to you. I think you’re a luscious, sexy woman and I’d like to fuck you right now, but I can wait and do things right.”
“I’ve never had anyone talk to me like this.”
“It’s because you’ve been goin’ with citizens, who like to lie and play games. With me, you know what I want right from the start. With other guys, they want the same thing but pretend they don’t. I don’t go in for that shit. You know what I mean?” Looking at her wide eyes, he chuckled and pressed his lips to hers, murmuring, “You fuckin’ do somethin’ to me, precious. Love your lips.” Kissing them softly, he stroked her back. “So, is Monday gonna work?”
    “For what?”
“Dinner. You said you want it proper, so I’m obliging.”
“I don’t know.” She pushed back from his embrace.
“You gotta eat and so do I, so let’s do it Monday night.”
“Okay, yeah, sure. Monday is fine. What time?”
“I’ll pick you up at seven o’clock. I gotta go, have to pick Jack up at my parents. I’ll make sure you get inside safely.” He looped his arm around her shoulders, then walked her up to the front door of her apartment building.
“Thanks,” she said as she inserted the key into the lock.
“Never need to thank me. I want to make sure you’re safe. Now, give me a kiss I can hold onto ’til Monday.” Drawing her into him, he gently kissed her mouth.
When she was halfway through the door, she yelled, “What about my pumpkin?”
Chas laughed deeply. “My dad will bring it by tomorrow. Cool?”
    “Okay.”
She stood in the doorway, watching him take off. He rode through the semi-deserted streets. At a red light, he tipped his head back, looking up at the harvest moon, the sky illuminated by a blanket of stars. He grinned broadly, wishing it were Monday night. What the fuck? I’m acting like it’s gonna be my first date. The Harley roared through the streets, its loud engine echoing. Shaking his head, he said aloud, “Fuck, it is my first date. How the hell did she get me to ask her out?”

Chapter Nine
A s she sat on her balcony, the warmth of the sun covering her, Addie watched the two neighborhood boys across the street raking the fallen leaves. Did I actually make a date with Chas? What the fuck was I thinking? He’s a badass—outlaw club and all . What is it about bad boys that gets me all the time? She knew she should forget about the sexy biker and stick with Matt, the reliable bookworm, but reliable wasn’t exciting—danger was. She groaned.
Deciding not to waste her Sunday afternoon by overthinking her attraction to Chas, she pulled out her folder of applications for the part-time position at the library, which she’d posted the previous week. She was in desperate need of someone to shelve and
