to think that when the worst of the storm hits
in a few hours?”
“Think we’ll all have more on our minds then.” The list of
items that needed to be taken care of seemed to grow longer by the second, but
she couldn’t seem to make herself concentrate on any of it. Not after the way
her body buzzed from being with the men again. It reminded her of how she’d
felt in that motel room.
The utter peace that had washed over her even if for only a
few minutes.
    “Why did you leave?”
Kate turned her face away so he couldn’t see the scowl
darkening her face. She should have known it was coming. It was inevitable
considering the tight quarters for the past few days and the hot, passionate
sex they’d all shared.
    “Snyder.”
He turned her in his arms, forcing her to look directly at
him. “We need to put this all out on the table, Kate. I think it’s clear it
can’t just be ignored and overlooked anymore.”
    “I know. I just—can’t. It can wait.”
“Until when? We’re helping to clean up the mess? Then it
will just be some other excuse you give me.”
The wind tossed her hair and she reached up to pull it away.
“You both want something different than I do. I mean, look at you two. You’re
still together and I can’t stay in one place for any length of time. Tornado
alley in the spring, anywhere along the Gulf or Atlantic during the summer.
It’s just the reality of the way it is. Life doesn’t always get to be the way
you want it.”
“Seriously?” Snyder’s expression darkened as he frowned. “Is
that the reason? Because you think we wanted you to settle down in one place.
You think so little of us both that you assumed we wanted you to be the dutiful
little housewife? All you had to do was ask what we wanted from you.”
Kate shook her head. “You two deserve some stability in your
life. I just bring nothing but chaos. That can’t be healthy.”
Snyder laughed, brushing his thumbs against her cheeks. “I
think Tripp and I each bring enough chaos to our doorsteps. You adding to it
won’t even ruffle the nap of the doormat resting there.”
God, why doesn’t he understand? “But that’s just it.
I can’t give you a home to have a doormat on.”
His sigh was so heavy, even the powerful wind couldn’t carry
it away. “Home isn’t a building, Kate. You and Tripp are my home. That’s what I
want. Where you two are is home.”
She started to protest, but he set his thumb over her mouth
to silence her.
“Above all else, we wanted you to be happy. If that is a
physical address, then that’s the way the cards fall. If it’s all of our crap tossed
into the back of a truck while we drive thousands of miles in one day, then
that’s fine too. Tripp and I have the same drive you do. Chase the storm
whatever it takes. Home is wherever you make it. For us, that’s where you are.
Where the three of us can be together.”
“Could have fooled me.” She winced. “Sorry, that was
uncalled for. Neither of you have done anything wrong and I’m unjustly blaming
you.”
“Darlin’, there is nothing, nothing better than you
being involved with us. The sooner you get that through that smart little brain
of yours, the better this relationship is going to be.” His hands threaded
through her hair, pulling it back so the wind couldn’t dance with it anymore.
“You’re home, Kate. You’re home. You just need to open your eyes and see
how much we love you.”
He said it with such conviction, she couldn’t help but
believe him. She whimpered as Snyder’s mouth closed over hers. Her body relaxed
as he backed her against the rail lining the porch. He was right, she was home.
Both physically and mentally.
She knew she needed to share more with Snyder, tell him her
deep-seated fears about the other secret she held, but now didn’t seem the
time. Not when he seemed to be doing his best to remind her how he really felt
about her. Her mind fuzzed as his tongue slipped into her mouth and he
