said.
âOh my God.â Her mother clutched the lip of the table. âIs it serious?â
Delilah could feel her feet beginning to sweat in her sneakers. âNo. Not yet. I mean, it could be. In time. But not yet. I mean, weâve only just started seeing each other.â
âWhen?â
âTwo weeks ago,â Delilah fibbed.
Her mother bounced eagerly in her chair. âName, I want a name.â
âJason Mitchell.â
âIs heâ?â
âNo, Mom, heâs not.â
âNot a problem,â her mother trilled. âHe can always convert.â The news of Delilahâs relationship seemed to have a profound effect on her motherâs appetite. Delilah watched in fascination as her mother piled more whitefish salad atop her bagel and bit into it lustily.
âWhat does he do?â her mother warbled through the food in her mouth.
âHeâs a hockey player.â
Her mother looked at her blankly. âA what?â
âA hockey player,â Delilah repeated with annoyance. âFor the New York Blades.â
âNever heard of them.â Her mother looked uneasy. âDoes he have his own teeth?â
âYes, Mother,â Delilah huffed, though she was embarrassed sheâd asked the same thing.
âAnd he makes a decent living hockey-ing?â
âHeâs a professional athlete. What do you think?â
âAs long as he can support my little girl, thatâs all that matters.â
âMom!â Delilah was mortified.
âI know, I know, itâs early yet. But the news that you have a boyfriendââ She took a deep breath as her eyes misted over. âExcuse me a minute.â She reached into the pocket of her raincoat and pulled out a tissue, dabbing her eyes. âThatâs better.â She put the tissue back in her pocket. âWhen do I get to meet him?â
Delilah panicked. âNot for a while. I mean, he plays hockey a lot. A lot. And he has lots of away games. I mean I barely see him myself.â
âIâm sure he can make time for brunch with his future mother-in-law.â Her mother winked.
Delilahâs hands linked tightly beneath the table. âI wish you wouldnât say things like that.â
âAfraid Iâll jinx it?â
Delilah nodded, not knowing what else to do.
âMumâs the word, then. For now.â Beaming, Delilahâs mother rose and came to stand behind her daughter. âIâm so, so happy,â she said as she wrapped her arms around Delilahâs neck and kissed the side of her face. âI have to be honest, I was getting a little worried. That last one you brought home was such a loser. And then you were spending so much time with that feygele dancer, I thought, Sheâll never meet a nice boy. But you have, and Iâm thrilled. Thrilled. â Her mother hugged her tighter. âLet me just say one more thing.â
âIf you must.â
Her mother showered the top of her head with kisses. âI have a feeling about this, Leelee.â
So do I, Delilah thought. I have a feeling Iâve just painted myself into the tightest corner in the world.
CHAPTER 06
âYouâre skating like shit. Get your ass over here.â
The disgust in Ty Gallagherâs voice made Jason slink off the ice like a puppy with his tail between his legs. Moronically, Jason had hoped his coach might not notice he was moving at half speed this morning, the result of one of the worst hangovers of his life. Five minutes of practice confirmed everything heâd heard about Ty: the guy didnât miss a trick.
Skull pounding, Jason stopped at the bench where Ty sat with a stopwatch and a clipboard, and waited. And waited. His humiliation grew the longer Ty ignored him. By the time Ty deigned to look up at him, Jason longed to sink through the floorboards.
âWhatâs the problem?â Ty demanded.
Jason swallowed. âIâm
