angels with their sweet, round faces but they were devils in their souls.
The chance of Jillian settling down and having kids was very remote, so she lavished all her attention on her nieces.
âGo. To. Bed. Or Iâll tell Daddy you misbehaved.â Pause. âThank you.â Pause. âShe refuses to take her antidepressants,â Brittany said, picking up their conversation as if it had never stopped, âso sheâll end up crying on the shoulder of every man who approaches her, those men will drop her and then sheâll become even more depressed because no one wants her. I feel a suicide attempt coming onâand it wonât be Momâs!â
The phone beeped and Jillian sat up straighter as a wave of excitement swept through her. âHang on. Iâm getting another call.â It had to be Marcus, and she could hardly wait to hear his voiceâuh, could hardly wait to tell him off, the pig. Amid Brittanyâs protests, Jillian clicked over. âWhat? This had better be an apology.â
âHas Mom called you yet?â her brother BrentâBrittanyâs twinâasked. âAnd why would I apologize to you? I havenât done a damn thing wrong.â
She sighed with disappointment. âNo, Mom hasnât called me, and donât worry about the apology. Iâm on the other line with Brit, whoâs telling me all about the situation.â
âMom never calls you with her problems,â he grumbled. âItâs not fair. I think she likes you best.â
âShe just wants someone to think of her as normal, and the someone she picked is me. Remember what the therapist said?â
âWants someone to think of her as normal,â he mocked. âI just wish her revelations and breakdowns happened during the day.â
âAgain, remember what the therapist said? Sheâs alone at night with nothing to distract her.â Jillian paused. âMaybe we should buy her a dog.â
âSheâs allergic, dummy. So, have you talked to Georgia lately?â
Jillian fell back onto the softness of her mattress. God save her from her family. âSheâs dating someone else. You know that, so stop stalking me about her. You should have asked her out when we were teenagers.â
âHow serious is she about the boyfriend? I asked her to a movie earlier today, but she said she had plans with him. What kind of plans?â
âSheâs practically engaged, so leave her alone. Now, goodbye, Brent,â she said and clicked over.
ââto bed,â Brittany was saying over loud giggles. âIâm serious, girls. This is your last warning. Steven! Steven, the girls wonât go to bed.â
The giggling stopped and murmuring took its place, then Stevenâs deep voice drifted over the line. âAll right, my little fruit pies, letâs give your mommy some privacy.â Static, kissing noises. âLove you, bunnybear.â
âLove you, too, sugarbutt,â Brittany said.
Jillian gagged. Thankfully, her other line beeped again, saving her from having to hear the rest. She clicked over. âWhat now, Brent.â
Silence.
âBrent. Please. No heavy breathing or Iâll have to hurt you.â
âUh, Jillian?â
Everything inside of Jillian froze. Hatred filled her, as did longing and need and all the tears she hadnât shed over him these many years. âI told you not to call here, Dad.â
âBrent told me you were up. I just wantedââ
Hand shaking, she clicked over. ââcutest man Iâve ever seen,â Brittany was cooing.
âAnd youâreââ Steven began.
âIâm here, Iâm here,â Jillian said hastily. She forced her dadâs phone call from her mind. Just like she always did. He would not affect her in any way. âBrent called me,â she said. âMom called him, too.â
âWhy does she always call us in
