passed many recently planted citrus orchards. Large herds of sheep brought back from the mountains for the winter grazed fields of green barley and alfalfa.
They crossed a shallow river, came out the other side, and rode south. By evening, they stopped at a farm that the outlawsâ tracks passed. Chet wanted to buy some good hay for their horses. The farmer, Al Holmes, came out, introduced himself, and looked them over.
âYou a lawman?â
âYes. Chet Byrnes. Weâre trailing some outlaws that passed by here earlier.â
Holmes nodded. âThey had some loose horses, too.â
âThey stole them. Weâve been tracking them for two days. Our horses could use some good feed.â
His wife, a short woman, joined them. âIâm Nell. Al, you can show them where to put their horses and Iâll get these men something to eat.â
âThank you, maâam. This is Jesus and Cole, and my name is Chet.â
âYou all are lawmen?â she asked.
âYes, we are.â
âMy, my. Iâd better get inside and fix you something to eat.â She disappeared inside the house.
Her husband showed them a corral to use and told them to store their gear in his harness shed. The horses were forked some of his fine hay. Soon, they had their chores completed and were talking with him about Chetâs operation up north.
âYouâre a big rancher. How can you do all this lawman work?â
âYou donât understand,â Cole said. âChetâs the only one ready to enforce the law up there. They made him a US Marshal because of his efforts.â
âIâd heard something about him bringing in a man who held a Prescott man in Utah for ransom?â
âThatâs us.â
âWell, Iâm honored you stopped here tonight.â
âWhat time did those men pass by here?â Chet asked.
âOh, about three hours ago.â
âThen they arenât too far away from here.â
âWhen will you arrest them?â
âWhen we catch up with them. Maybe tomorrow or the next day. Weâre on their track now, but they donât know that and they can get lazy.â
âHow can you three be so calm?â
Chet shrugged. âJust another job we have to do.â
Just then, the farmerâs wife told them the food was ready and to come to the kitchen. She directed them to seats. âAll of you sit down. This is just a quick meal I made up so you could eat. Sorry, Iâd of done more, but I knew you must be hungry. It isnât much.â
âLooks good to us,â Cole said, âwe didnât have to fix it.â
âThisâll be just fine,â Chet added. âIt looks good. We thank you for it.â
After they were all settled and enjoying the food, she asked, âMarshal, do you live in Prescott?â
âIâm just Chet, maâam. We live on a ranch east of there. Itâs my wifeâs place.â
âOh, whatâs her name?â
âHer name is Marge, and weâve been married about a year.â
âIs this your first marriage?â she asked.
âYes, no one else would have me.â
His men shook their heads and laughed.
âIâm sorry if I ask too many questions.â
âNo, Nell. I donât mind. Iâm proud of my wife.â
âHave you been in the territory long?â Al asked.
âNo, I brought my entire family out here last spring.â
âMy, you sound like a busy man.â
Cole passed the basket of her sliced sourdough bread to Chet. âMaâam, he is busy. Try some of this, Chet. Itâs wonderful.â
Toward the end of the meal, Nell offered them coffee, so Chet figured they must not be Mormons. Lots of Mormons lived in the Territory, and he knew they avoided the use of coffee as if it was poison.
The meal finished, they rose from the table and thanked Nell again for the good food. He told the Holmeses
