money. So don’t treat me like I’m some idiot.”
She was silent for a long time, looking everywhere but at me. “Sorry,” she said curtly. “I’m not mad at you. I’m mad at my dad.”
I didn’t respond. Instead I crossed my arms over my chest and looked at her with a raised eyebrow. She ignored me. It pissed me off, but I figured it was better than getting yelled at for something I didn’t do. She rummaged through the drawers of the desk, and then turned her attention to the big filing cabinet in the back corner of the office. “There has to be something here,” she muttered, mostly to herself.
She turned back to me. “I’ve never thought much about this before,” she said. “I’ve been using the same accountant that my dad used. I bet he screwed me over too.”
“What are you looking for?” My curiosity overtook my annoyance.
“There is an old ledger somewhere in here. My dad doesn’t know I kept it. He cleared most of that stuff out, but I thought that it would be a nice nostalgia item.” She groaned and shook her head. “I can’t believe how stupid I am.”
I knelt down beside her. “It’s not stupid to trust your parents. That’s just how we’re programmed as a species. Besides, there was no way you could know what your dad was thinking.”
“Yeah, well I’m never speaking to him again.” She crossed her arms over her chest, and stared at me petulantly.
“Don’t you think you’re being a bit childish?” I said the words softly, hoping that a lowered cadence would soften the blow.
“You have no idea what you are talking about. If you ever say anything like that again, I’ll punch you in your effing face.”
Chapter 3
The anger in my voice, scared me. I saw desire flash through Kirk’s eyes, and lust shot through my veins. I reached out, pulling him in for a kiss. His mouth came down over mine, hard and insistent. I parted my lips so he could slip his tongue past my teeth. None of our other kisses had ever felt like that before. There was almost a desperate quality about it.
Kirk pushed me away. “I want you so much right now,” he panted.
“Take me then,” I said. “Just fuck me now. With the gym full of people and the office door unlocked. If someone walks in, good.”
“Don’t tempt me,” Kirk growled. He pulled me to my knees.
“Am I?” I asked as Kirk turned me around. “Am I tempting you?”
He kneaded my breasts through my shirt, and he murmured in my ear, “What do you think?”
“Just do it then.” I gritted my teeth and glared up at him. I knew I’d said that I wasn’t mad at him, but I actually felt the anger pulsing off of me. Something dark dropped over Kirk’s features and he pushed me away again. “What’s wrong?” I taunted. “Are you chickening out? Don’t be such a pussy.” I didn’t know why I was taunting him, but as the venom spewed out of me, I felt lighter.
“I have to go meet my coach,” he said. “I’ll just be in the ring if you need me.”
“Thanks,” I mumbled. I let him leave before I slowly climbed to my feet, and my emotions still felt raw and fragile. I hoped no one would walk through the door because I was liable to either bite their head off or turn into a weepy mess. Neither scenario made me happy, but I knew that was my reality at the moment.
I rummaged through the filing cabinet again, but came up empty. With a defeated sigh, I sank into the desk chair. I stared at my cell phone for a good twenty minutes debating whether or not I should call my dad, but ultimately decided against it. The fact was that I was mad at him. Not just mad, furious. He’d lied to me. He’d left me his mess to clean up, and he hadn’t even had the decency to tell me the truth. If I confronted him about it, I was afraid that he would just feed me another lie, and I didn’t think I could handle that.
The first thing I needed to do was find a new accountant to get the books straightened out. When I knew what kind of
