silly little joke.
He stood up and pulled her up to him, holding her close. He brushed his finger over the marks on her neck. He needed to tell her honestly and gently.
“Yes those marks…  well, I could make up a story I suppose but that wouldn’t be right… And I want things to be right between us. I suppose I’ll just have to come clean and tell you the truth, won’t I? Your initial train of thought is correct. I really am a blood thirsty vampire!” he said in a completely serious voice.
“Oh ha ha ha!” she said “you’re so funny! Now what really happened?” She leaned back and looked at him.
There was silence for a moment as he stared at her face, her trusting blue eyes locked onto his. He dropped his head and kissed her briefly. Her scent was so good. It stirred his blood again. Now he would explain to her.
“What happened” he said in a low soft voice, “is that when I made love to you, I bit you. Those are my marks Serry. I drank your blood last night, a whole gorgeous pint of it. Actually I might have had a little more than that, it was so delicious I was almost ecstatic and just couldn’t stop myself. You slept for 12 hours because you had lost the blood. Remember the high feeling you had, the state of euphoria? – well that was because I passed serum into your bloodstream, through my bite. It contains a certain kind of anaesthetic which stops the initial pain of the bite;  it also acts like a drug which makes you feel high. Is there anything else you would like to know? Ask me anything you like…”
She was standing stiff as a board in his arms, full of shock tinged with horror.  He stood back a little further holding her hands, judging the strength of her initial reaction.
“You really bit me?” She trembled. He nodded slowly.  “You actually drank my blood? But how can you be a real vampire? I just don’t believe you, how can I? Vampires are not real!”
She looked into his eyes and bizarre as it sounded and felt, she knew he was telling the truth. What other explanation was there for her weakness, the marks… Then there was his rather obvious obsession with her neck. His eyes really were magnetic. He was gorgeous and charming. He was the perfect vampire.  But she needed real answers… proper confirmation…
“Ethan, I saw you eat yesterday and you drank alcohol… surely vampires can’t do that?”
“We can train ourselves to drink and eat very easily. Most of us do not, there’s no need. But many of us enjoy wine… alcohol affects us pleasantly too. That’s why we have a cellar full of it here! We should live solely on blood and water. But those who mix with humans frequently have to appear human, so occasionally we do eat and drink small amounts in human company. Your food and drink doesn’t taste that pleasant and we cannot not satisfy our thirst or our hunger by consuming it, but it does satisfy human curiosity.”
“…. and I’ve seen you go out in the light..?”
“Yes I can do that. But it is only when we go out in full sunlight that it starts to affect the cells in our body. We cannot take much more than a few hours of it. Strong sunlight will kill us eventually. Light is also a problem for our eyes. Our irises are light red naturally but they turn to a very bright red when subjected to strong UV rays. I wear protective coloured contact lenses all the time to disguise the colour.  Would you like me to take them out.  Do you want to see my red eyes and perhaps my teeth, as proof – would that help?”
“Yes…” She started to sob as he slipped his lens out on his fingertip and she saw the reddish circle that was hiding behind it. He then lifted his lip and pushed gently on his short but sharp looking canine with his finger tip. It lengthened substantially before her eyes.
She stood in a shocked stupor. Tears were pooling in her eyes…
“I still cannot believe it. You really are one of the immortal ones…?” she finally managed to say as
