column, and Iâm always waiting for him to trip me up and somehow get me to confess it. I have to choose my words very carefully when he brings it up.
âUm, no. Why?â I said, the picture of innocence.
âIt kind of reminded me of us. Did you write it?â
What????
âUm . . .â
âI mean, maybe I wrote it,â he said with a half smile.
â Did you write it?â I asked, giddy with relief now that I knew he meant the question and not the answer.
âMaybe yes and maybe no.â
âWell, what does it say?â
âIâm surprised you waited this long to ask me that. Are you sure you didnât write it?â
Oh dear.
âJust tell me!â I cried.
âIt says, âDear Know-It-All. I miss my friend. We used to spend a lot of time together, but now weâre both really busy and we donât see each other very often. Iâm not sure what to say or do. Any advice? From, Feeling Left Out and Lonely.â â He looked at me.
âSo did you write it?â I asked quietly. I was scared to breathe.
âNo,â he said, shaking his head. âBut I could have. Did you?â
I gulped. âNo.â We were quiet for a minute. âBut I could have,â I said.
He nodded.
âSo what did he say?â
âWho?â Michael asked.
âDear Know-It-All?â
âOh. She said, âDear Lonely: Donât despair. Just tell your friend you miss him or her. Itâs reallythat simple. Good luck, KIA.â â
âI noticed you called Know-It-All a âshe,â â I said bravely.
âAnd I noticed you called Know-It-All a âhe,â â said Michael.
I shrugged. âMaybe itâs you.â
âI couldnât fill those shoes,â he said.
âHow do you know?â I asked.
âTheyâre girlsâ shoes.â He smiled and shrugged, starting to walk away.
âHey, Mikey?â
âYeah?â he said without turning around.
âI miss you!â
âI miss you, too, Pasty.â Journalist Struck by Cupidâs Arrow Dies of Love in Hall.
Oh boy. I couldnât wait for the next issue. Or the next meeting tomorrow, when Iâd sit next to Michael Lawrence and weâd get assigned another article. I made a mental note to ask Allie for some outfit advice. All I could think about was what shoes Iâd wear.

BREAKING NEWS: YOUNG GIRL MELTS ON SIDEWALK DURING RECORD HEAT
Itâs hot. Right now as I sit on my front steps waiting for my BFF, Hailey Jones, and her mom to take us to the air-conditioned mall on the third day of an awful heat wave, itâs the kind of hot that makes me wonder if I could actually dissolve into a unrecognizable blob of goo by the time Hailey gets here. Breaking News: Young Girl Melts on Sidewalk During Record Heat is what Iâm thinking.
Itâs also the kind of hot that makes me wish for a chill in the air and sweaters and, believe it or not, school. School just goes with fall. School also goes with seeing my forever and ever crush, Michael Lawrence, every day. I havenât seen him since the townâs Fourth of July fireworks display, which wasawesome. Hailey, Michael and his friend Frank, and I all went together. I couldnât really call it a double date since Hailey says she doesnât have a crush on Frank, but he definitely has a crush on her and maybe one of these days Hailey will like him back. Hailey says heâs a really nice guy, but his hair is too dark and his ears are too big for her taste. I think sheâs actually afraid to like someone she knows has a big crush on her. But that secretâs just between me and me.
The only thing that bums me out about the start of school is that Iâve finished my tenure as Dear
