put my hands on my waist and fought to control my breathing; it would all be for nothing if I looked dizzy or unsteady now.
Someone said, âOh my God.â
I looked at the lieutenant and the sergeants where they stood off the edge of the mat. âI can carry my own weight, Lieutenant.â
âHell, you can carry me,â Mercy said.
Santa said, âHow did you do that? Thereâs not enough of you to lift that much weight.â
âCould you do it again?â Grimes asked.
âYou mean reps?â I asked.
He nodded.
I grinned. âMaybe, but I wouldnât want to try.â
He gave an expression that was almost a smile, then shook his head. âAnswer Santaâs question, Anita.â
âYouâve heard the rumors. Hell, you checked up on me before I stepped off the plane.â
âYouâre right, I did. So you really are the human servant of your local Master of the City.â
âThat wonât make you this strong,â I said.
âI saw your medical records,â he said.
âAnd,â I said.
âYouâre a medical miracle.â
âSo they tell me.â
âWhat?â Santa asked, looking from one to the other of us.
âSo, you really are carrying five different kinds of lycanthropy, but you donât shift.â
I nodded. âYes.â
âWait,â Santa said, âthatâs not possible.â
âActually,â Grimes said, âthere have been three documented cases in the United States alone; you would be the fourth. Worldwide there have been thirty. People like you are what gave them the idea for the lycanthropy vaccines.â
Someone must have made a movement because Grimes said, âYes, Arrio.â
âIs her lycanthropy contagious?â
âAnita,â he said.
âShapeshifters are only contagious in animal form, and I donât have an animal form, so, no.â
âAre you sure?â he asked.
âNot a hundred percent, no. I wouldnât drink my blood, and if you have a cut, you might not want me to bleed on you.â
âBut youâve got five different kinds in your blood, right?â Santa asked.
âYes,â I said.
âThen if you bled on me, I wouldnât get just one, Iâd get them all, or nothing, right?â
I nodded. âYes.â
âWould it make me be able to do what you just did?â
âYou can do what I just did.â
He shook his head, frowning. âAble to curl over twice my body weight, so, six-ninety, seven hundred pounds.â
âIâve seen a shapeshifter about your size that could do it, but Iâm not as strong as a real shapeshifter. If I were, I could do reps easy, and I canât.â
âSo a shapeshifter your size would be even stronger?â Davey, the tall blond with the nice mouth, asked.
âAbsolutely.â I looked back at the lieutenant. âThatâs what I mean about the vest and helmet. It just wonât protect you from that level of strength.â
âIt will protect you if you get hit in the chest or head.â
âSome.â
âYouâll wear the full gear when you go out with us, Anita.â
âYouâre the boss.â
He smiled. âReports say you arenât much for following orders.â
âIâm not.â
âBut Iâm the boss.â
âFor these men, this unit, you are, and if I want to work with you, that makes you the boss.â
âYou have a federal badge. You could try to be the boss.â
I laughed. âIâve seen the way the men react to you. I could have a dozen federal badges, and that wouldnât make any of these guys see me as their boss.â
âIt will let you take all your weapons into the main station if you want to rub their faces in it.â
âIâm trying to make friends here, not enemies.â
âThen youâll be the most polite fed weâve met in a
