watched as he pointed at Jacinta and then ran his finger across his throat.
Millieâs heart thumped. âYou little brat!â she called and shook her fist back at him.
âWhat did he do?â Jacinta whispered, still not wanting to turn around.
Millie was about to tell her when she spotted Alice-Miranda shaking her head.
âNothing. Heâs just horrible,â said Millie, still staring at the boy.
âCome on, letâs go.â Alice-Miranda grabbed Jacintaâs hand and pulled her away.
âHe wouldnât have recognised me in this outfit anyway,â Jacinta said.
Alice-Miranda wondered about that too. He certainly wouldnât have known it was Millie. Perhaps he was rude to everyone.
The boy shut the curtains just as the adults caught up to them.
âWhat were you looking at, girls?â Hugh asked.
âIt was the boy from the shop near the temple,â Alice-Miranda explained.
âThe one who upset Jacinta?â her father quizzed.
She nodded.
âWell, I might pay him and his father a visit after all.â
â Who upset Jacinta?â Ambrosia asked. It was the first sheâd heard about it.
âPerhaps we should talk about it later, Daddy,â Alice-Miranda said pointedly.
Hugh looked from his daughter to Ambrosia and back. âOkay, darling.â
The group arrived at the inn. âOh my goodness, look at you,â Aki exclaimed as the children flooded into the foyer. âKawaii.â
âI think weâve heard that about five thousand times between Harajuku and here,â Millie said. âItoshii Squirrel really is popular.â
âThatâs because he is so cute,â Aki grinned.
âWhat are we doing for dinner, then?â Hugh looked at Cecelia.
âI think we should stay in tonight,â Cecelia said. âThe children are tired and Iâm afraid Ambrosia and I have more meetings tomorrow.â
âHere it is, then,â said Hugh. He turned to the girls. âIn the meantime, what would you three like to do until dinner?â
âCan we play a game?â Alice-Miranda asked.
âI can explain how to play one of the Japanese board games,â Aki suggested. âYou could take it up to your room.â
Alice-Miranda and Jacinta nodded.
âThat would be great,â Millie said, âexcept Iâll have to get changed first. I donât think squirrel paws will be very helpful at moving board pieces.â
Cecelia nodded. âThat sounds absolutely perfect. I think your father and I might have a rest, Alice-Miranda â Iâm afraid we oldies donât have as much energy as you girls.â
âAnd Iâm going to get a start on todayâs article,â Ambrosia said. âHow about we meet here at six-thirty for dinner?â
It was agreed. The adults wandered off, and Millie and Jacinta set about choosing a board game with Akiâs help. Alice-Miranda was happy to let them decide â she was too distracted thinking about the boy next door.
Â
In the girlsâ room, Millie scratched at her fur, eager to get out of the squirrel costume. She pulled off the head and took a deep breath.
âRemind me that I never want to get a job as a character at Disneyland,â she sighed.
âWhat did that boy next door do when I looked away?â Jacinta asked as she unfurled her futon.
âUm, he shook his fist,â Millie lied. She glanced over at Alice-Miranda, who nodded.
âSo why do you think they have a surveillance camera over there?â Jacinta plonked down on the floor and took the lid off the game box.
âWho knows?â Alice-Miranda replied. âMaybe they have a lot of money from the Itoshii Squirrel shop.â
âYes, thatâs probably it,â Jacinta agreed as she set up the board.
Alice-Miranda wondered too. She had a strange feeling about that boy and the house across the alleyway.
