man.â
Sam wasnât allowed brandy, but at this point he drew the bottle toward himself and took a swallow directly from the bottle. âGo on.â
âI will undertake to convince Emily to move to Boston. Iâm prepared to stay here for several months if it takes that long.â
âUntil Iâm dead.â
Bret hadnât wanted to say that. He was grateful Sam did it for him.
âIf I can convince her to go to Boston, Iâll see she doesnât marry anyone who will treat her badly. Donât ask me how Iâll do that, because I donât know yet.â
âAnd what is this going to cost me? Half my ranch? Half my fortune?â
âJust the right to vote your stock.â
Sam pushed the brandy bottle away and leaned forward. âAre you trying to take over the company?â
Bret shook his head. âUncle Silas has kept me in piddly jobs for six years, but that time has given me a chance to see how the company works. If we donât make some changes, weâll be out of business in ten years.â
âI knew the company wasnât making much money, but I didnât think it was that bad.â
âIâve worked out a plan to restructure the company. My cousin Rupert Swithinâanother poor relationâagrees itâs what we need to do to survive. Even my grandmother thinks itâs a good plan.â
âI havenât thought of Elizabeth in years. Is she as independent as she always was?â
âIf it hadnât been for her, Uncle Silas wouldnât have given me a job.â
âSo youâre a young rebel who wants to bring down the head lion. Why should I help you?â
âBecause I can help
you
.â
âAnd how do you plan to do that?â
Bret laughed. âYou canât expect me to give away all my secrets.â
Sam slammed his fist down on the table. âI wonât have you trying to make Emily fall in love with you just so you can push your way into a job I canât be sure you can handle.â
Bret sobered quickly, reined in his temper. âIâm not ready to get married, and Iâm not in a position to marry in any case.â
âYour position wouldnât matter if you married Emily.â
Bret could see that Sam wasnât going to give inquickly, but he respected the older man for not accepting Bretâs word without any validation. âIâm not asking you to commit to anything now. I realize you donât know anything about me, but you havenât been able to convince Emily to go to Boston on your own, and you wonât be able to guide her after youâre gone. At some point, youâre going to have to trust someone.â
âAnd you think that person ought to be you?â
âAs I see it, you have four choicesâyour brother, Uncle Silas, Joseph, or me. You have to decide which one you trust with your daughterâs future.â
âYou think youâve got me cornered, donât you?â
âNo.â
âDonât lie to me, boy. You know I canât stand my brother and donât trust Silas or his boy.â
âYou could ask my grandmother.â
âIf she couldnât stop her husband from disinheriting her own daughter, she couldnât protect Emily.â
âYou could hire someone.â
âAnd have him sell out to Silas.â
Bret had expected to have a difficult time convincing Sam to trust him, but he seemed to be gaining ground. It would probably be better if he kept quiet now, but there was one fact he felt he couldnât withhold.
âThis may not help my case,â Bret said, âbut I feel I have to tell you I find your daughter very attractive.â
Sam grinned suddenly. âIâd think something was wrong with you if you didnât.â
âWhat Iâm trying to say is that although I am attracted to her, I have no intention of deepening our relationship beyond trying to
