buyers the next morning.
âI donât think itâs really that evil,â Robert told Jillian.
She almost jumped, apparently startled that he was watching her. âEvil?â
âYouâre staring at your beer as if you think it might bite.â
She flushed and smiled. âNo, but I had twoâ¦maybe three last night. Then a fortune-teller spooked me, and I passed out and later had nightmares. Iâd actually been thinking of something a bit lighter for this evening.â
âThen, weâll get you something lighter.â
âOh, no, itâs all right. I donât think the beerâ¦â
âThat the beer caused the situation?â
âI wish it had,â she murmured.
âDo you think Iâm evil, then?â
âNo, of course not,â she protested, flushing more furiously.
He glanced across the table. Daniel and Connie were still deep in conversation.
âGood, Iâm glad. Because Iâm not. In fact, I intend to be there for you,â he said. He had meant it lightly, not intending to betray Douglas Llewellynâs trust in any way. He was disturbed himself by the sudden intensity of his voice, but he spoke again, anyway. âI swear, when you need me, Iâll be there for you.â
The words had an echo.
As if heâd spoken them before, he thought.
And she was staring at him. Completely perplexed.
As if sheâd heard him speak those exact same words before.
âWow, sorry,â he murmured, easing back against the wall. âI didnât mean to get so scary there. I just meant thatâ¦â
âThat youâd be there. On my side,â she murmured.
âYeah.â
âI should probably leaveââ
âNo, donât, please.â
âHey, youâre the one who wanted to come here,â Connie protested, picking up on their conversation.
Jillian didnât move.
The waitress came back to the table. âYou all said that youâd just come for a drink, so I didnât mention that the special tonight is shepherdâs pie. Really excellent, if youâd like to stay for dinner.â
âShepherdâs pie,â Daniel said, looking across the table at Jillian. âYou know who used to make the best shepherdâs pie in the world?â
She smiled back. âMy mother, so Iâve heard.â
Daniel nodded. âI wasnât all that old myself when she died, but Iâll never forget how good a cook she was. She could whip up a masterpiece with a whole kitchen full of little terrors. And her shepherdâs pie was the best. Letâs stay.â
âGee, I canât,â Connie said.
âJilly?â Daniel said.
âWellâ¦â Jillian murmured.
âHey, isnât someone going to say, âSure, Connie, you can stay. Call your mom. Weâll all be so disappointed if you donât have dinner with us. Maybe Joe can come, too.ââ
Daniel grinned at Jillian, then turned toward Connie. âSure, Connie, you can stay. Call your mom. Weâll all be so disappointed if you donât have dinner with us. Maybe Joe can come, too.â
âMr. Llewellyn, youâre a quick study,â she told him. âExcuse me, Iâll make a call.â She slid from the booth.
âConnie, I have a phone right here,â Daniel said.
âI donât want to sound as if Iâm having too much fun. And I may have to beg and plead a bit. Embarrassing in front of friendsâand the boss.â
âRobert, can you stay?â Daniel enquired.
âWouldnât miss it,â he agreed.
âIs this in his job description, Daniel?â Jillian murmured, sipping her beer, speaking to Daniel, but studying Robertâs eyes.
âDinner with fellow employees, especially at friendly Irish pubs. Bitch of a job, but heyâ¦â Robert murmured back.
She smiled, the slightest stain of a blush touching her cheeks. Something inside
