the soft warmth of the moss-covered rock. Safe from danger. But not safe from her fears.
She didn ’ t want to wake him. Didn ’ t want them to head for the camp. Most of all she didn ’ t want him to leave her. He ’ d made no mention of where he would take her. No mention that he wanted anything more than sex from her. Not that there could be anything more. According to their laws, women could only take women as mates. Males were not mate material. Yet deep in her heart, there was an unexplained urge to make Joe her mate.
Perhaps the seeds had been sown when they ’ d held hands yesterday. Joe had explained males and women walked side by side. Lived together. Unbelievable. She would have to ask him more about the part of the world he came from. Up until now she hadn ’ t had a chance. They ’ d been running from the women of the hub and from each other. Using all their free time to have sex. Perhaps it was a way to not face the truth of her situation. The truth being if he decided he didn’t want her after all there would be no more strong arms curling around her body making her feel safe. Worst of all there would be no more lovemaking.
She ’ d been thinking about Joe throughout the night and throughout today. Up until now she ’ d managed to keep a handle on her emotions. After all, he was just a male. He shouldn ’ t even be affecting her emotions. Unfortunately he was. He ’ d been the only male that had made her come apart. Mentally and physically. He was unbelievable in the way he aroused her. It was more than just great sex. There was something strong and deep in the way she felt about him. She couldn ’ t explain it. All she could say was she ’ d never felt this way about a male before.
And there was something in his eyes too. Something in the way he looked at her. No other male slave had looked at her with such strong emotion. Yet again, she couldn ’ t put a name to that emotion.
Annie sighed in frustration and snuggled against his warmth. A new urgency swept over her. She needed to find a way to make him want her. Or at the very least take her with him to wherever he came from. The thought of never seeing him again was unacceptable. Deep in her heart she knew something inside her would die if they parted.

    Chapter Fifteen

Joe Hero grimaced as he stepped onto another sharp rock that littered the shoreline of the river.
A good long soak in a hot tub is what he needed. Something to soothe away all the pains that invaded his body. Or better yet another round of hot and heavy sex with Annie. At least having sex would keep his muscles loosened up and his mind off what he should do about her.
His heart quickened as he watched her naked ass sway seductively in front of him. Resisting the urge to cup those luscious smooth ass cheeks he forced himself to remember the strange way she ’ d looked at him after one of their lovemaking sessions earlier. Something in the way she ’ d smiled at him had tugged at his heartstrings. Had made him feel lost and confused. Her look was a direct contrast to the delicious torture her body had freely given him as he ’ d plunged inside her hot cavern.
The way they had kissed afterward. Hot, intense kisses that had led to some more lovemaking until they ’ d finally fallen asleep wrapped in each other ’ s arms.
“It was the Yellow Hairs, just like I thought.” Annie said as they climbed up the low embankment and walked into the vulture-laden meadow.
Joe ’ s stomach heaved as he passed the skeletal remains of a human. The thought that this body could be one of his brothers almost brought him to his knees until he spotted the thatch of brown hair on the skeleton ’ s skull.
He sighed in relief. Not the same color as either of his brother ’ s hair. And definitely not their size. From this person ’ s thin frame he had most likely been a teenager.
“The Yellow Hairs don’ t leave many scraps behind,” Annie said from ahead of him. “But
