admittedly jealous about Alexâs success. As Bess had pointed out, it was too much of a coincidence that Ronan happened to be back in River Heights at the exact time that Alex was shooting his film here. Plus, I was curious about this mysterious project that was keeping Ronan up all night. I decided to ask Alex about it as soon as I had the chance.
Of course, when I returned to the set I couldnât approach Alex because he was still preoccupied with directing the first scene. At least there hadnât been any near deaths in my absence. I tracked down George and Bess at base camp and filled them in. They agreed that there was likely more to Ronanâs story than heâd shared.
âI wonder if his mystery project is the sabotage!â Bess cried.
âThatâs what Iâm thinking,â I replied.
Meanwhile, my friends didnât have anything new to report on the Roberta Ely front; apparently she and Lali had been holed up in Laliâs trailer since I left. We agreed that whatever the reason for their meeting, it wasnât friendly. If Lali was simply telling Roberta Ely that she was going to cancel the graveyard scene, why would she want to do that in person? It wasnât like Lali had the time to sit around and have a long chat.
âHey, Omar! Wait!â Cora called out.
âIs that Omar over there?â she asked as she raced past us. She pointed at the shaggy brown head retreating toward the bathrooms. I squinted in his direction.
âI think thatâs Spencer, actually,â I said, recognizing his black fleece vest.
âThey look really similar from behind!â Bess pointed out. âI made that mistake yesterday.â
âOmar said he would set up an interview for me with Brian, but I canât find him!â Cora fussed.
âIâm right here, Cora.â Brianâs voice came from behind us. I turned to see him sitting on a chair several yards away with weights strapped to his ankles, pumping his legs up and down. âInterview away!â
âOh, there you are!â Cora flashed a toothy grin and turned on her camera.
âSo what are you doing, Brian?â
âJust a little leg workout between takes,â he responded with a wink. âItâs important to keep limber and warm so that I can move fluidly.â
George rolled her eyes and under her breath mumbled, âShow-off.â
âCora,â Brian said, âI know Iâve asked you this, and Alex said we had to wait till after we finish shooting, but maybe you can give me some of your footageâthe behind-the scenes stuff? I wonât distribute it or anything, but I want to show my mom what itâs like to be a lead actor in a film!â
Cora cocked her head to the side. âIâll convince Alex and Lali. Donât worry.â
âGreat!â Brian exclaimed. âItâs embarrassing, butshe has been begging âand nobody says no to Mama Newsome.â
â Psst! Nancy!â Omar hissed, coming up behind me. âHave you heard anything about the announcement?â
âNo . . . what are you talking about?â
âNysa just told me that Lali is going to make a big announcement during lunch!â He paused. âI thought that as a journalist you might have some sort of scoop.â
âUm, unfortunately not,â I replied. âDid she say what it was about?â
Omar looked absolutely terrified. âNo, but what if sheâs canceling the film?â He shuddered at the thought. âBrianâs career would be dead! And then so would mine!â
I looked over at Brian, who was soaking up Coraâs attention as he talked her through the best ways to get fit while sitting down. If he was aware of the rumors, he didnât seem too concerned. Come to think of it, Brian had been handling all the chaos extremely well. He was utterly unflappable.
